Elon, N.C. - The Elon University Department of Athletics celebrated the 2021-22 school year with the annual Athletic Awards Banquet Monday evening in Alumni Gym. The department recognized and remembered the many outstanding achievements from the past year.
Both team and department awards were handed out. Football's Davis Cheek and cross country/track & field runner Maria Ahm received the prestigious Stein H. Basnight Award for the top male and female athletes of the year.
Cheek ranked among the top 20 quarterbacks nationally in completion percentage, passing yards and total offense. He earned the CAA Football Chuck Boone Leadership and Excellence Award and was a finalist for both the Walter Payton Award and the Doris Robinson Award. He was also named Stats Perform FCS National Offensive Player of the Week after completing 27-of-31 passes for 328 yards in a win over New Hampshire. He was signed as a rookie free agent after the 2022 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers.
Ahm won her second consecutive CAA Cross Country individual championship in the fall and was named CAA Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Year. In track & field, she broke the school record in the 5,000 during the indoor season and then won the CAA Championship in the 10,000, an event in which she should qualify for the NCAA East Division Regionals. Over the course of her career, she has led Elon to five CAA team championships, three in cross country and two in track & field, including both team titles this year.
Men's soccer player Sam Bacon and women's basketball player Duru Tasman earned the Robert C. Browne Sportsmanship Award. The Browne Award was established in 1972 in memory of Elon alumnus Robert C. Browne by his sister, Pretto Browne-Crumpton, and her husband, Dr. J.L. Crumpton, and is presented annually to the Elon male and female athletes who have best displayed exemplary qualities of sportsmanship as determined by the Elon Department of Athletics administrative staff.
Track & field's Madison George and Hannah Miller (also with cross country) were co-winners of the A.L. Hook Scholar-Athlete Award for females, while the male recipient was Sam Bacon. The Hook Award has been presented annually since 1975 in honor of Dr. A.L. Hook to the Phoenix male and female junior or senior athletes who possess the highest cumulative grade-point average with a minimum of two years of playing time at Elon.
