Richmond, Va. – The Elon University volleyball team opened the 2022 fall season at the VCU Invitational, losing to Liberty in three sets Friday, 25-16, 25-22, 25-16.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Elon fell behind quickly in the opening set, trailing 9-2 in the early going. Liberty extended the lead to as many as 12, but the Phoenix found some rhythm late in the frame before falling 25-16.
- Elon used that momentum early in the second set to jump out to a quick lead before Liberty rallied. The Flames went ahead 16-12 but a 6-3 run, capped by a Sydney Love kill, brought Elon to within one.
- A Brooke Doherty kill brought the Phoenix to within one at 21-20 but Liberty used a 3-1 run to pull away for the 25-22 victory.
- Liberty again got off to a quick start in the third set, leading by as much as seven midway through the stanza. Elon tried to rally with a 4-1 run to make it 13-9 but the Phoenix never got closer as the Flames closed out the match.
