Elon, N.C. – The Elon women's soccer team was unable to contain an explosive Virginia Tech attack as the Hokies handed the Phoenix a 5-1 defeat Sunday evening on Rudd Field. Virginia Tech improved to 3-0-1 on the season and Elon dropped to 1-1-1 after posting three goals in each of its first two matches of the 2022 season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Virginia Tech scored twice in the first half, breaking a scoreless tie in the 22^nd minute and then adding an insurance goal with less than five minutes remaining in the opening frame.
• The Hokies added to the lead just 3:30 minutes into the second half and then got a penalty kick goal for a 4-0 lead.
• Elon freshman Rachel Buckle posted her first career goal a few minutes later on an assist by senior Beky Myers, her first point of the young season.
• Virginia Tech closed out the scoring with less than seven minutes remaining for the 5-1 win.

• Freshman Rachel Buckle scored her first career goal, becoming the second Elon freshman, joining Isa Murdock, to get a goal thus far this season.
• Senior Beky Myers picked up her first assist of the season. She equaled her point total from the entire 2021 season with the assist and now has nine career points (2 goals, 5 assists).
• Virginia Tech outshot Elon 12-5 for the contest (7-3 on shots on goal), but the match was much more even in the second half, favoring the Hokies 7-5.
• Buckle had a team high two shots in the contest.
• Goalkeeper McKenna Dalfonso made a pair of saves for Elon.
• Elon's seven goals in 2022 are the most for the program through three matches since the team scored nine in three matches in 2017.
