Volleyball Falls To NC State

Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C. — The Elon volleyball team jumped out to a one-set lead Saturday against NC State, but couldn't hang on, as the Wolfpack came from behind to hand the Phoenix a 3-1 loss on the final day of the NC State Tournament. Elon now sits at 1-5 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Neither team built much separation early in the first set, but after falling behind 13-11, the Phoenix reeled off six consecutive points to seize a 17-13 lead. Elon didn't look back from there, hitting .405 as a team en route to a 25-21 win.
  • The Wolfpack jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the second set, which proved to be all the cushion that it needed in a 25-15 victory.
  • A back-and-forth third set saw the Phoenix pull ahead 22-19 late, but NC State rallied from there, winning six of the last seven points to claim a 25-23 victory.
  • The fourth set followed a similar theme as the others, with neither team gaining much of an advantage early. But after Elon went up 10-9, the Wolfpack settled in, going on a 12-3 run to pull ahead 21-13. The Phoenix put together a late run of its own, but it couldn't overcome the deficit and ultimately lost 25-20.

NOTES

  • Leah Daniel led Elon with 14 kills. She also tied Jordan Gower for the team lead in aces (two).

  • Haylie Clark's 36 assists were a season high, besting her previous mark of 27, set against Tennessee on Friday. She also added 10 digs.
  • Gower paced the Phoenix with 23 digs. It was her third 20-dig performance of the year.
  • After hitting .405 in the first set, Elon hit .025 in the second, .104 in the third and .057 in the fourth.

FROM COACH MARY TENDLER

"Proud of the players for how well they competed the entire match today against a strong, well-coached team. We were behind quite a bit in that second set, but bounced back in the third and finished the fourth set strong.  We are making some spectacular digs in the back row, but need to convert more of those to points. We are all extremely excited for our first home match on Tuesday."

UP NEXT

  • Elon will host Duke for its home opener at 6 p.m. Tuesday inside Schar Center.
