Men’s Tennis Travels to Face No. 14 Wake Forest in First Match of Spring Season

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University men's tennis team opens its spring campaign when it travels to face No. 14 Wake Forest on Monday. The match at the Wake Forest Tennis Center is slated to start at 5 p.m.

THE MATCHUP
  • This will be the eighth meeting between Elon and Wake Forest.
  • The Demon Deacons hold an 8-0 advantage in the all-time series. 
  • No. 10 Wake Forest defeated Elon 7-0 in the last meeting between the teams on Jan. 15, 2022.  
ABOUT THE PHOENIX
  • Elon is coming off a strong spring in which it went 15-9 and finished as the runner-up at the CAA Championship.
  • Among the returnees is Nicholas Campbell, the Most Outstanding Player at the CAA Tournament and an All-CAA second-team singles selection.
  • Others include senior Nicholas Condos; juniors Daniel Martin (All-CAA second team in singles and doubles), Luke Queiroz and Ben Zipay; and sophomore Esteban Penagos.
  • The Phoenix welcomes three freshmen in Oskar AntinheimoVeljko Krstic and Jake Pettingell. Antinheimo, from Helsinki, earned a UTR rating of 12 and has been ranked as high as No. 483 in the ITF Junior Rankings in singles play. A native of Belgrade, Serbia, Krstic has been ranked as high as No. 175 in the ITF Junior Rankings in both singles and doubles. Pettingell, from Sarasota, Fla., achieved a top USTA ranking of No. 22 in the state of Florida. Elon also adds Ahmed Hosni for the spring season. A native of Cairo, Egypt, Hosni has been ranked as high as No. 197 in the ITF Junior Rankings and reached two ITF Junior singles finals in 2022.  
  • Elon is led by Michael Leonard, who is beginning his 19th season at the helm.
LAST TIME OUT
  • The Phoenix concluded its fall season by competing at the Virginia Tech Halloween Clash on Oct. 28-30. 
  • Martin went 3-0 in singles for the week and wrapped up the event with a 6-4, 7-5 victory against Purdue's Daniel Labrador. He finished the fall season with a team-high nine singles wins. 
  • Campbell and Krstic also won singles matches on the tournament's final day, as both players finished the event with two singles victories. Campbell defeated Purdue's Michal Wozniak 6-4, 6-4, while Krstic cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win against Purdue's Al-Khan Mujtaba.
  • Condos and Antinheimo rounded out Elon's singles wins on the final day of the tournament. Condos defeated Hassan Boroudi of Purdue 6-3, 6-2, and Antinheimo picked up a 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 win over Purdue's Tomasz Dudek. 
SCOUTING NO. 14 WAKE FOREST
  • This will be the second match of the spring season for No. 14 Wake Forest, as the Demon Deacons will face Tennessee Tech at 11 a.m. prior to taking on the Phoenix.  
  • Tom Bresky is in his 12th season leading the Wake Forest program. Bresky has led the team to a 273-78 overall record and the 2018 National Championship since taking over the program in 2011. 
  • The Demon Deacons posted a 33-7 record last season and went 26-0 at home. They advanced to the Super Regionals at the 2022 NCAA Tennis Championship, where they fell to Kentucky. 
  • Wake Forest enters the season ranked No. 14 in the NCAA Division I Men's Preseason Top 25 Coaches Poll. The Demon Deacons are the second-highest ranked Atlantic Coast Conference team in the poll behind only Virginia, which is ranked first and received all 12 first place votes. 
  • The Demon Deacons return three players who won double-digit singles matches last season – Melios Efstathiou (16), Filippo Moroni (11) and Matthew Thomson (11). 
COMING UP
  • The Phoenix travels to Houston for matches against Rice on Jan. 27 and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Jan. 28. 
  • Elon hosts North Carolina Central in its home opener at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on Feb. 4, with the match scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
