Elon Football Drops First CAA Football Game To Villanova

Villanova, Pa. – Battling a stingy Villanova defense and constant downpour, the Elon Football team was unable to dent the scoreboard Saturday, dropping a CAA Football contest 21-0. Villanova improves to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the CAA with the win as Elon falls to 3-4 and is tied with the Wildcats at 3-1 in conference play as well.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Villanova opened the game with a 10-play, 59-yard drive that chewed up 5:30 of the first quarter for a 7-0 lead.
  • The Wildcats took a 14-0 lead on a 50-yard rush on fourth-and-1 on their second possession of the game.
  • Neither team scored in the second quarter but Villanova added to the lead with a third rushing touchdown midway through the third.
 
STATS AND NOTES
  • DJ Hamilton had his first career interception in the second quarter.
  • True freshman Landyn Backey immediately followed with a 33-yard reception from Justin Allen. For Backey, it was the second consecutive game in which he had a catch of at least 30 yards. They have accounted for the first and second receptions of his college career.
  • Arthur Nwandu played both sides of the football, recording a tackle on the defensive line and a six-yard reception at tight end.
  • Kyle Romenick had a 61-yard punt that was downed at the six-yard line and averaged 50.0 yards over six punts for the game. The 61-yarder tied his career long.
  • Brandon Tyson had a career-high 14 tackles and Caleb Curtain added a career-best 12.
  • Tyson and Jesse Powell II each had two tackles for loss. Powell had the team's lone sack of the contest.
  • Villanova improves to 3-1 all-time against Elon, including a 1-1 record in the state of Pennsylvania.
  • Elon entered the day in sole possession of first place in CAA Football. By the end of the day, seven of the league's 16 teams could have one loss or fewer.
 
UP NEXT
  • Elon will host Monmouth Saturday at 2 p.m. for Homecoming. The Hawks are 3-3 overall and 2-1 in CAA Football action
  • Following the Monmouth game, Elon will have a bye week before playing at Delaware on Nov. 4 on 1 p.m. to begin November football action.
