The Rundown
Elon converted on its first shot of the contest in the fifth minute. After receiving the ball from
Gustavo Atencio near the top of the box,
Victor Stromsten relayed a touch off the back of his foot to
Calle Edelstam, who sent it into the bottom left corner of the net to put the Phoenix ahead 1-0. The goal was Edelstam's first of the season.
Just under two minutes later, the Camels responded with a goal of their own, as Tai-Reece Chisholm found the back of the net off a rebound to tie the score at 1-1.
The Phoenix retook the lead in the 17
th minute when Stromsten found
Scott Vatne at the top left corner of the box. Vatne took a low shot that curved its way inside the left post and past the goalie for his third goal of the season.
After strong pressure from Elon over the next 15 minutes, a span that included four Elon corner kicks and two shots, the Phoenix stretched its lead to 3-1 in the 34
th minute. Making a run down the left side of the field,
Isak Sedin sent a cross into
Jack Dolk, who caught a piece of the ball and nudged it forward into the goal for his first of the season.
The second half saw fewer scoring opportunities than the first. A Campbell shot hit the crossbar in the 52
nd minute and three other shots by the Camels were later thwarted by
Tomasz Wroblewski.
Heavy rain started to fall in the final 10 minutes. In the 84
th minute, Chisholm netted his second goal of the match to trim Elon's lead to 3-2.
With the rain still drenching Rudd Field, neither team generated a shot in the final five minutes, as the Phoenix picked up the 3-2 win and a crucial three points in the CAA standings.
