Elon Drops First Match At College of Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Elon University volleyball team was defeated in four sets at College of Charleston on Saturday.

Elon 1, College of Charleston 3 (25-23, 16-25, 15-25, 21-25)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was neck-and-neck to start the opening set. Tied at 5-5 Elon went on a 5-1 run thanks to kills from Caroline Berlekamp and Clara LaRue, an Ericka Link ace and a pair of Cougar attacking errors to put the Phoenix up 10-6. From there the Phoenix won five of the next nine points to keep a five-point lead. College of Charleston responded with a 5-0 run to tie the set at 15 all. Elon again broke ahead 20-17 but following a similar pattern the Cougars went on a 5-2 run to tie the set again at 22-22. Two kills from Sydney Love and one from Cameron Lanier would give the Phoenix the first set 25-23.
  • With the score tied at 7-7 in the second set, College of Charleston went on a 5-0 run to gain the lead they would keep for the rest of the set. A pair of kills from Keira Kasten and one from Lanier along with an attacking error from the Cougars would get the Phoenix within one at 12-11. However, College of Charleston responded quickly winning 13 of the next 18 points to win the second set 25-16.
  • The third set followed a similar pattern to the second as neither team led by more than two midway through the set. Tied at 13-13, the Cougars went on an 8-1 run to go up 21-14. Elon would only score one more point as College of Charleston took the third set 25-15.
  • The Cougars took a commanding 9-4 lead in the fourth set before back-to-back kills from Kasten, a Cougar error, and a kill from LaRue got the Phoenix within one at 9-8. Elon would take their first lead of the set at 11-10 thanks to an ace from Caroline Doyle. College of Charleston would eventually retake the lead 15-14 and unfortunately the Phoenix could not come back, and the Cougars won the set and match 25-21.
NOTES

FROM COACH TENDLER
"It was good to see the fight in us today. We found ways to get kills, served tough and had good ball control. Unfortunately, we gave them too many points on unforced errors and bad choices on shot selection.  Once again, Jordan was amazing on defense. She kept us in a lot of rallies and gave us opportunities for more swings."

UP NEXT
The maroon and gold will return to TD Arena tomorrow for a 1 p.m. match against the Cougars.
