Elon Dismantles Charleston In Regular Season Finale

Elon, N.C. – The Elon women's soccer team (3-9-5) showcased their finest CAA performance of the season against the College of Charleston (2-10-5) Sunday afternoon. Using three different goal scorers, the Phoenix pulled away with a pair of second half goals to defeat the Cougars, 3-0.

Freshmen Grace Gelhaus and Gabby Hoschek led the way for the Phoenix with a goal each in the second half, giving them both four on the season. Kelly Degnan netted her first goal of the season just eight minutes in and the Phoenix never looked back.

McKenna Dalfonso ends her season by expanding her lead in all-time shutouts following the clean sheet. The Sewell, N.J. native finishes her four years as a Phoenix with 22 career shutouts.

How It Happened

  • The two teams would trade chances early with the Cougars registering the first shot on goal of the afternoon, but the shot from Bubbles Dever was saved by Dalfonso.
  • Elon would strike first in the eighth minute when Lydia Totten played through Kelly Degnan who found the bottom right corner with the outside of her right boot to give the Phoenix a 1-0 advantage.
  • The Phoenix would continue to dominate the possession in the first half with most of the possession in the first 45 minutes coming inside Charleston's own half.
  • Gabby Hoschek would nearly give the Phoenix a second late in the first half, but the shot would be saved by Savannah Barron.
  • Kelly Degnan almost beat the buzzer in the first half with another shot on target, but that attempt found the gloves of Barron as well.
  • Charleston started the second half well with a shot from Grace Powell finding the target, but Dalfonso was equal to it.
  • Three yellow cards would be given within the opening ten minutes of the half with two given to the Phoenix and one to the Cougars.
  • Grace Gelhaus would double Elon's lead in the 58th minute with a wonder goal. Gelhaus beat three defenders and fired a curling effort into the bottom left-hand corner to give Elon another goal.
  • The Phoenix continued to pile on the pressure against the Cougars with four shots in the span of 120 seconds on the stroke of the 80th minute.
  • The third goal would finally come when Grace Gelhaus fired in a cross that found the head of Lydia Totten would center the ball and it found the feet of Gabby Hoschek would put the ball in the back of the net from two yards out.
