Elon, N.C. - The Elon Phoenix (2-7-3) dominated the final 45 minutes but could not break down the stingy Delaware Blue Hens' (4-4-6) in a 1-0 defeat. The Phoenix is now separated from the sixth seed by seven points with five games to play.
The Phoenix outshot the Blue Hens 13-0 in the second half, including hitting both the crossbar and the post trying to best the Blue Hen goalkeeper.
Lydia Totten recorded seven shots with three on target.
How It Happened
- Delaware started the game immediately with a goal, 26 seconds into the match. Raychel Speicher dribbled down the left endline and slotted a goal into the bottom right corner to give the Blue Hens the early lead.
- Delaware would fire two more shots in the first five minutes but neither found the target.
- Elon would fire their first shot on target when Lydia Totten found space in the box but the attempt from distance was snuffed out by Kyla Burns.
- The chances would stale until the 29th minute when Grace Gelhaus made an attempt but the headed fell off target.
- The Phoenix would thwart two attempts from the Blue Hens during the final five minutes of the half. A shot from Lea Panagiotidis would be cleared off the line by Grace Gelhaus then Anna Hamner would make a save on the following corner kick from Delaware.
- Elon would start the second half with what was their best chance of the game so far. Following a Delaware turnover, Lydia Totten would capitalize on the mistake and fire a shot past Burns but it ricochet off the crossbar keeping Delaware's lead.
- A header from Katie Lowe would find the goalie gloves of Burns before Kennedy Jones would be booked for a hard challenge.
- A flurry of shots from the Phoenix would come in the span of five minutes with shots from Ashlee Brehio, Totten, and two from Grace Gelhaus would not find the back of the net.
- Totten would fire another shot on target in the 71st minute and in the 78th minute but Kyla Burns would stop both shots. Elon could not muster any shots apart from a Morgan Juran long shot in the 83rd minute.
