BROOKLINE, Mass. – A pair of goals by
Victor Stromsten helped the Elon University men's soccer team to a 2-2 draw at Northeastern on Saturday, Oct. 7, in a CAA matchup at Parsons Field.
The tie moved the Phoenix to 1-6-3 overall on the season while going to 0-3-2 in CAA play. The Huskies go to 3-4-4 and 1-2-3 in league play.
The Rundown
Elon had an early chance in the 14
th minute.
Sam Durand sent in a ball from the top left of the box that found
Jack Dolk close to the back post. Dolk got a foot on it, but the ball would miss the target and out of harm's way.
The Phoenix scored the first goal of the match in the 19
th minute. Stromsten was able to head in his second goal of the season off a corner kick from
Scott Vatne as Elon moved in front 1-0.
The Huskies tied the match just 10 minutes later. Federico Tellez scored off a free kick from just outside the 18 as the ball found the top left corner of the goal to level the match.
Northeastern took the lead just over three minutes later. The Huskies' Kevin Ogudugu was able to strike on his first score of the season just inside the box to put Elon into a 2-1 deficit in the 32
nd minute.
Elon had a chance to tie the game in the 69
th minute.
Luca Erhardt had a good look just outside the top of the box the curled towards the left post, but the Huskies netminder Gregor Shaw was able to get a hand on it for the save.
Stromsten and the Phoenix leveled the match in the 71
st minute. Elon earned a free kick with Vatne sending the ball into the box, causing a scrum between both teams. The ball eventually found the foot of Stromsten as the striker earned the brace to put the game at one-all.
In the 76
th minute, Stromsten nearly got the lead for the Phoenix along with a hat trick. The Stockholm, Sweden, native was able to break free of the defense to go one-on-one against the keeper, but pushed his shot to far right of the target.
Elon's last chance to go ahead came with nearly 10 minutes remaining in the match. Ogudugu tried to add a brace of his own with a shot from the left side, but was stopped by Phoenix keeper
Tomasz Wroblewski. The Phoenix was quick to counter the other way as Stromsten again beat the defense down the right side with
Sam Durand streaking toward the middle of the box. Stromsten slipped a pass to Durand, who fired a strike towards the goal, but Shaw was able to corral it for another save.
Neither team would get another shot on goal for the remainder of the match as the contest ended with a 2-2 draw and a point shared between both teams.
Notes
• Elon outshot Northeastern, 12-10, while having a 5-4 advantage in shots on target. The Phoenix was the most aggressive team in the second stanza with an 8-5 advantage in shots over the Huskies.
• Stromsten becomes the first Phoenix player with two goals since
Jack Dolk had two versus North Carolina last season.
• Wroblewski and Shaw had two saves each between the pipes for the Phoenix and the Huskies, respectively.
• The draw moved the all-time series lead to 6-3-3 for Elon over Northeastern in a series going back to 2013.
