WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Elon University volleyball was unable to halt a strong William & Mary attack as the Phoenix fell 3-0 on Sunday, Oct. 8 at Kaplan Arena.
Elon 0, William & Mary 3 (14-25, 22-25, 20-25)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Tribe raced out to a commanding 12-6 lead in the opening set. Despite a rally by Elon that saw the maroon and golf trim the lead to as few as five late in the set, William & Mary closed out the first set 25-14.
- Neither team led by more than two points in the early stages of the second set. With Elon down 10-8, William & Mary won four of the next five points to take a five-point lead. The Phoenix responded and cut the lead to two at 24-22, saving two match points but eventually Tribe took the second set 25-22.
- William & Mary again got off to a fast start in the third, taking an early 11-6 lead. Led by two Cameron Lanier kills and a pair of Tribe errors, the Phoenix rallied to get within two points at 12-10. William & Mary got the momentum back quickly, winning six of the next seven points to extend their lead to 18-11. Elon again would fight late in the set to get within three points at 21-18 but wouldn't get any closer as William & Mary won the set and match 25-20.
