Elon Falls in Three Sets To Delaware Saturday

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University volleyball team lost to Delaware on Saturday, as the Blue Hens defeated the Phoenix 3-0 at Schar Center.

Elon 0, Delaware 3 (16-25, 24-26, 22-25)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Phoenix took an early 6-3 lead in the opening set before Delaware went on a 5-1 run to gain the lead that they would keep the remainder of the set. With Delaware leading 14-13, the Blue Hens won six straight points and kept the momentum to eventually take the first set 25-16.
  • Delaware kept the energy going into the second set pulling ahead 8-4. Elon responded winning nine of the next 14 points to tie the set at 13-13.  The Blue Hens led by no more than three points the rest of the way. With the score, at 21-18 in favor of Delaware back-to-back kills from Sydney Love got the Phoenix within two late in the frame. It was a battle to the finish but ultimately Delaware came out on top 26-24 in the second set.
  • The Phoenix raced out to a quick 7-2 lead to start the third set. Delaware cut the lead throughout the frame and eventually got within one at 11-10. From there, the Blue Hens went on an 8-4 run to take an 18-15 lead. The Phoenix again came back and tied the game at 20-20 thanks to back-to-back service aces from Jessica Parker and a Blue Hen error. Delaware then went on a 3-0 run to take the lead 23-20. The Blue Hens kept that lead the rest of the way before eventually winning the set and match 25-22.
NOTES

FROM COACH TENDLER
"We have had great practices this week. It didn't show at the beginning, but we finally started playing much better in the second set and gave ourselves a chance to win despite all the service errors. We will need to get off to a better start tomorrow."
