WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Elon University men's soccer team fell in penalty kicks in the CAA semifinal round versus Monmouth on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 5 at Hesse Field on the Great Lawn.

No. 6 seed Elon (6-8-4) fell 4-2 to the No. 2 seed Hawks (8-3-6) in penalty kicks to settle a 0-0 draw between the two teams. Monmouth will advance to the championship round to face No. 1 seed Hofstra next weekend.

THE RUNDOWN
The Phoenix had a few great chances within the first 10 minutes of the match.
Jack Dolk had an attempt blocked in the seventh minute before Elon drew a foul to earn a free kick. The ball found
Victor Stromsten in the box where he squared up versus the keeper, but the save was made.

The Hawks got their first shot of the match in the 13
th minute, but it was deflected away by the Phoenix to set up a corner kick. Monmouth followed with its first shot on goal off the set piece, but
Tomasz Wroblewski was able to knock it away.

Elon looked to get on the scoreboard with a couple of chances in the 66
th minute.
Scott Vatne took an attempt from just outside the box that was blocked before having another try after the carom that was corralled by the keeper.

Monmouth nearly put in the go-ahead go with just seconds remaining in the match. The Hawks' Adrian Roseth took a shot from about 25 yards from the top of the box after a Phoenix turnover, but Wroblewski made the save as the match went into overtime.

In the two overtime periods, Elon had two shots in the extra 20 minutes, but neither shot was online as the contest went into penalties to settle the contest.

The Hawks took advantage of a couple of Elon misses during the shootout converting four of its five tries to clinch a berth to the league final to eliminate the Phoenix.

NOTES
• Both teams were even in shots at 10-10 with the Phoenix having four shots on goal compared to five for the Hawks. Monmouth also won the battle in corners, 7-3.
• Stromsten led the Phoenix in total shots with four in the match with two coming on goal. Vatne also had a pair of shots.
• Wroblewski had five saves in the match for the Phoenix while posting his fifth shutout of the season.
