Elon Falls to Tribe in Second Round at CAA Championships

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Elon University men's basketball team saw its stay at the 2023 Jersey Mike's CAA Championship come to an end as the ninth-seeded Phoenix fell to eighth-seeded William & Mary 73-51 on Saturday, March 4, at the Entertainment and Sports Arena.

Sam Sherry led the Phoenix (8-24) with 15 points while also adding his first double-double with a career-high 12 rebounds. He also added a pair of blocks and shot 6-of-8 from the floor. Sean Halloran scored 14 points as he went 6-of-11 from the field and a perfect 2-of-2 from three-point range.

Miguel Ayesa posted a game-high 23 points for the Tribe (13-19), hitting 7-of-14 from three-point range. Matteus Case and Tyler Rice added 11 for William & Mary, who went 14-of-32 from three-point range.

THE RUNDOWN
• After both teams traded three-pointers to open the game, the Tribe went on a 7-0 run to expand their lead to 10-3 by the 14:22 mark in the opening half. Elon battled to trim it to three on layups from Sherry and Max Mackinnon to make the score 10-7.
• Elon made it a two-point game, 12-10, with 11:34 left in the opening period. Mackinnon found Zac Ervin at the top of the three-point line with the senior able to fake out the defender for a clean look. An ensuing 8-0 run for William & Mary gave itself a 10-point lead, forcing a Phoenix timeout with 9:42 left in the opening half.
• A pair of baskets by Sherry brought the Phoenix within six, 20-14, at the 8:40 mark. The Tribe's Jack Karasinski knocked down a three-pointer to put William & Mary up nine, 23-14, going into the under-eight media timeout.
• William & Mary took a nine-point lead, 29-20, after a Ben Wight free throw, but the Phoenix came back to cut it to four after five straight points by Halloran. The Tribe was however able to take a seven-point advantage into the break as Chris Mullins hit a shot just before the end of the first half.
• Both teams traded buckets to start the second half, but Tribe knocked down four three-pointers to take a 47-37 lead after Ayesa's second triple of the half. Elon cut it back to single digits on a layup by Jerald Gillens-Butler going into the under-16 media timeout.
• After a Torrence Watson three-pointer brought the Phoenix within nine, 53-44, the Tribe pushed their lead back into double-digits on three free throws to take a 12-point lead, 56-44, with 10:12 left to play.
• Elon would pull within 10 a couple of times in the final 10 minutes of the game, but the Tribe continued to expand their lead before closing out with the 73-51 victory.

NOTES

• Halloran scored in double figures for the ninth straight game and for a team-best 26th time this season.

• Sherry had seven offensive rebounds for the Phoenix, a new career-best mark for the Mechanicsburg, Pa., native.
