ELON, N.C. – The Elon University softball team snapped its lengthy losing streak with a dominant 9-1 victory over Detroit Mercy on Tuesday evening, March 7, in an early week game at Hunt Softball Park.
Elon improved to 6-14 on the season and halted its season-long six-game losing skid. Detroit Mercy fell to 0-10 to extend its own losing streak to start the season.
AT THE PLATE
• Elon recorded eight hits in the game, its third game out of its last four of seven or more hits.
Claudia Penny (2-of-3) and
Carley Davis (2-of-4) both had multi-hit performances with Penny adding her team-best seventh multi-hit game of the season.

Allee Seering added her third home run of the season, tying for the team-lead. She also drove in two RBI along with
Kaitlyn Wells. Seering was also walked two times.

Bella Devesa,
Chloe Hatzopoulos,
Mauri Murray and
Reagan Hartley also had RBI for Elon.
IN THE CIRCLE

Taylor Cherry (1-1) picked up her first win of the season pitching 3.0 innings with one run allowed and a pair a of strikeouts in relief while splitting time with starter
McKenna McCard.
• McCard held the Titans without a hit in her 3.0 frames while walking one with two strikeouts.
THE RUNDOWN
• The scoring started early for the Phoenix in the first inning. After reaching on a walk with one out,
Drew Menscer was brought home by Seering's two-run home run. Penny later reached in the frame on a double, but she would be stranded as the next two batters were retired.
• Hatzopoulos hit a double off the left field wall to open the bottom of the second. Two batters later, Hartley hit an RBI single to bring the score to 3-0.
• Detroit Mercy was unable to answer with its three batters being retired by McCard in the top half of the third. This increased Elon's momentum leading into its home half of the frame.
• Seering started the inning on a leadoff walk. A couple of singles by Penny and Davis would load the bases for Devesa. At her second at bat of the day, Devesa hit an RBI single into left, scoring Seering. Hatzopoulos followed to drive in Penny on a groundout to advance runners into scoring position. Wells continued the momentum with her two-RBI single that brought the score to 7-0 going into the fourth.
• After Cherry replaced McCard in the top of the fourth, Detroit Mercy finally responded with its first run of the game. Jaiden Lara hit a home run on a 1-1 count to left, breaking up the no-hitter and having the score stand at 7-1. Cherry and the Phoenix defense recovered however, inducing a double play two batters later before a strikeout retired the side.
• Elon got a run back in the bottom of the fourth. A sacrifice fly to left by Murray allowed
Payton Swart to score from third with two outs and regain the seven-run advantage for the Phoenix.
• The Phoenix would close out the game in the bottom of the sixth. Davis led off to start the frame, reaching on the Titans' second error of the day. Devesa followed with an attempted sac bunt, but an errant throw by the pitcher to first allowed her to reach as Davis sprinted around the bases and scored the game-ending run from first, ending the contest in six innings with a final score of 9-1.

Elon opens Colonial Athletic Association play this weekend, hosting league newcomer Stony Brook at Hunt Softball Park. The series begins with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 11, at 12 p.m. and will air on FloSoftball.
