Women’s Tennis Falls Just Short In CAA Tournament Semifinals Against William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The No. 4 seeded Elon University women's tennis team won doubles and raced out to a 3-1 lead against No. 1 William & Mary on Saturday in the semifinals of the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament but could not secure the winning point, as the Tribe erased the deficit to win 4-3.

With the loss, the Phoenix finishes its campaign with a 16-7 record. William & Mary improves to 14-5 and will have a chance to defend its CAA title in tomorrow's final against either UNC Wilmington or Drexel. 
 
THE RUNDOWN
  • Elon came out firing in doubles as the Phoenix took early leads on all three courts. Olivia Archer and Miray Konar were the first to finish for Elon, as they won their second match together in the tournament on Court 3 by a 6-3 score.
  • For the second straight day, Sibel Tanik and Lizette Reding clinched doubles for the Phoenix on Court 1 with a 6-2 victory. Elon's top tandem finishes the season with a 12-6 mark playing the No. 1 spot. 
  • On Court 2, Julie Ball and Madison Cordisco were also up a break, as they led 5-3 when the match was stopped. 
  • Not long after the Tribe tied the match at 1-1 with a win at No. 1 singles, Archer put Elon back in front 2-1 with a commanding 6-1, 6-0 victory on Court 5 against William & Mary's Ine Stange. Archer ends the season with an 18-2 record after winning her final 15 matches. Elon's all-time leader in singles victories finishes her career with 73 wins. 
  • Reding moved Elon ahead 3-1 on Court 2 with a 6-1, 6-3 win against Elisa Van Meeteren. The junior finishes the tournament with a perfect 4-0 record across doubles and singles. 
  • The Tribe won the final three completed matches at the Nos. 3, 4 and 6 spots to earn a comeback victory. 
  • Konar suffered her first singles defeat at Elon on Court 6 as she lost 6-3, 6-2 against Emma Pell. Ball fought from a break down in the second set on Court 4 but was broken late in a 6-3, 7-5 defeat against Emma Fernald. Helen Sarikulaya led 5-2 in her opening set at the No. 3 spot but won just two more games, as she fell 7-6, 6-2 in the final match to finish.  
  • Elon's last five losses in the CAA Tournament have come against William & Mary. Four of those setbacks were in the semifinal round.
