THE RUNDOWN
Stony Brook got on the board early in the top of the first inning. Ashley Jacobson drove a two-out single to center field, scoring Alyssa Costello as the Seawolves took a 1-0 lead.
Elon had its first best chance to add runs in the bottom of the third.
Reagan Hartley drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a sac bunt by
Drew Menscer. Hartley moved to third on a single by Grant to give the Phoenix runners at the corners with one out and the heart of the lineup due up. The Seawolves finagled out of the jam by inducing the next batter to foul out to the catcher and closing out the inning on a fielder's choice.
The Phoenix finally put a run on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Davis took a 2-0 count over the left field wall as the solo round-tripper tied the contest at one-all. Elon would get two more runners on base in the inning with two outs, but a ground out would leave them stranded.
Stony Brook looked to take the lead in the top of the sixth. Jacobson hit a one-out double to left center before being replaced on the base paths by a pinch runner. A grounder moved the runner to third, but Wells was able to strikeout the final batter to escape the inning unharmed.
The Seawolves saw another runner reach third in the top of the seventh. Brooke Dye singled and moved to second with one out before advancing to third on a putout at first on the next at bat. Elon got out of the inning on a grounder to third as the Phoenix looked for the walk-off opportunity in the bottom of the frame.
Elon grounded out to start the bottom of the seventh, but saw Menscer and Grant reach on back-to-back singles to give the Phoenix the potential winning run in scoring position. A fly out to left reduced Elon to its final out, but Penny drew a free pass to load the bases and put the Phoenix closer for the go-ahead run. The Seawolves got out of the jam after forcing the final out on a fly out to right as the game headed into extras.
Stony Brook plated the go-ahead run in its half of the eighth inning. Costello led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a sac bunt to move 60 feet away from putting the Seawolves on top. Elon induced the second out of the inning on a strikeout, but a wild pitch enabled Costello to score and give Stony Brook a 2-1 lead going to the bottom of the eighth.
The Phoenix was retired in order in the home half of the frame as the Seawolves took the 2-1 victory for its first-ever win over the Phoenix.
