Elon Settles For Scoreless Draw With Longwood

Farmville, Va.- The Elon backline showed another strong performance on Thursday night, but a solid Longwood backline was equal to them. The two sides settled for a 0-0 draw after a back-and-forth battle in Farmville, Va.

The Phoenix (1-0-2) remains unbeaten through their first three games and put up another great performance at the back from the defensive combo of Katie Lowe and Kerri Coffman. M.K. Levush showcased another strong performance for the Lancers (1-1-1). The graduate goalie collected six saves on the night while Anna Hamner and McKenna Dalfonso collecting every ball that came on target.

Kelly Degnan and Rachel Buckle provided a spark in the attacking third with the pacey Degnan creating chances and beating defenders for opportunities with the ball. The Phoenix created a number of opportunities at the end of the first half and the beginning of the second half, but the score ended in a scoreless draw.

How It Happened

  • The Phoenix and Lancers traded chances early with both sides forcing saves out of the opposing goalies within the first ten minutes. The first Phoenix chance came on a long-range effort from Buckle that skipped into the arms of Levush.
  • At the 17-minute mark, Degnan was subbed on for the Phoenix and was able to make an impact with her speed. Degnan was get a shot on goal that was saved in the center of the goal.
  • The first half continued to be a back-and-forth contest with each team holding the ball for limited stretches of time before a turnover or an aerial battle.
  • Elon began the second half with an immediate chance from Degnan that was blocked with the Lancer defense.
  • Elon would continue to put the pressure on Levush with shots from Ashlee Brehio and then a strong effort from Grace Gelhaus. Gelhaus found her way on the left side and attempted the shot from a tight angle, but the shot made its way toward the roof of the net before it found the fingertips of Levush.
  • The teams would then enter a ping-pong match of back-and-forth soccer exchanging both possession and time in the offensive side of the field.
  • The closest change for Longwood came with ten seconds left. Following a foul plus a booking on Gabby Hoschek, Longwood's Meghan Piazza lined up a free kick from just outside the box. The ball careened off the crossbar and over the top of the goal as time expired shortly after.
