Second Half Comeback Gives Phoenix 2-2 Result at High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. – A goal scored by Franc Gamiz Quer in the second half helped erase an early two-goal deficit for the Elon University men's soccer team as the Phoenix earned a 2-2 draw at Piedmont Triad rival High Point on Wednesday evening, Sept. 13, at Vert Stadium.

It was the second straight draw for the Phoenix, who moved to 1-2-2 on the season. High Point went to 1-1-2 on the year.

The Rundown
High Point took the early lead just within the first 10 minutes of the contest. The Panthers drew a foul inside the box and converted on a penalty kick to go in front 1-0 in the ninth minute.

The Panthers doubled their lead in the 17th minute. Finn McRobb scored after securing the ball on a corner kick in the box and put the maroon and gold down 2-0.

Elon answered back to cut into its deficit in the 22nd minute. Jack Dolk found Ben Rosenblatt on the right side of the box with the senior able to place the ball just in the high center of the goal for his first of the season.

The Phoenix kept the attack going for the equalizing goal in the first half. Just a minute later, Scott Vatne had an attempt stopped by the keeper while Dolk also just missed a few close chances to tie the contest. Vatne had one more good look to tie the game in the 28th minute, but was again stopped by Panthers' keeper Justin Stewart.

Coming out in the second half, the momentum looked to be on the Phoenix's side. Elon held the Panthers' offense to only two shots in the second stanza with both being saved by Tomasz Wroblewski in the 57th and the 65th minute of action.

Elon nearly tied the match in the 59th minute. Vatne dribbled the ball a few feet from midfield and nearly found the back of the net while trying to catch the netminder out of position. The ball however just sailed high over the crossbar to keep the match a one-score contest.

The Phoenix continued to push numbers forward to chase the equalizer and had another chance to level the match in the 82nd minute. Elon was rewarded a penalty kick after a foul in the box with Vatne taking the assignment. Stewart was there to stop the try however before the ball went out of play for an Elon corner kick.

Elon tied the match off the set piece in the 83rd minute. After a scramble in the box, the ball found Gamiz Quer near the back post with his low shot tying the contest at two-all to erase the Phoenix's 2-0 deficit. The goal would help settle the final tally of the match as the contest ended in a draw.

• With its strong second half, the Phoenix outshot the Panthers, 14-6, with a 7-4 advantage in attempts on goal. Elon also dominated in corners, 6-2.
