Phoenix Falls at Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Elon University men's soccer team suffered a 4-0 setback at Stony Brook in its CAA opener on Saturday, Sept. 2 at Lavelle Stadium.

The Phoenix moves to 1-2 on the season and 0-1 in the CAA. The Seawolves earned their first win of 2023 to improve to 1-2 and go to 1-0 in the early league season.

The Rundown
The Phoenix had a couple of chances early in the match for the first tally of the game. Elon drew a pair of corner kicks and had its first shot of the match off the set piece, but Joachim Blomsterberg's try was stopped by the keeper near the 11th minute. Calle Edelstam followed with an attempt off the carom, but his shot went wide.

A Phoenix turnover deep in Stony Brook's offensive third led to the Seawolves taking a 1-0 advantage in the 16th minute. An errant pass by the maroon and gold was intercepted by Stony Brook with the Seawolves' Amit Magoz having a one-on-one chance versus Tomasz Wroblewski in goal. Magoz was able to slot a shot past the netminder that put Elon down early.

The Seawolves doubled their lead in the 39th minute. Magoz got free for a shot that was initially saved by Wroblewski in goal. Olsen Aluc however got ahold of the loose ball and pushed in the rebound to put Stony Brook ahead 2-0 before the half.

Stony Brook added the third goal of the game in the 56th minute. Moses Bakabulindi took a cross from Jon Jelercic off the right side and finished inside the box to push the Seawolves lead to 3-0.

As Elon pushed numbers forward for the rest of the contest, the Seawolves added an insurance goal in the 88th minute. Alex Fleury took advantage of the Phoenix defense out of position for Stony Brook's fourth goal which finalized the 4-0 score.

Notes
• Both teams were tied in shot attempts at 13 apiece with the Seawolves having an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal.
• Elon won the corner battle, 9-2.
• This is the first time the Phoenix has allowed four or more goals in a game since facing James Madison in 2019 in a 6-0 loss.
• Stony Brook evened the all-time meeting versus the Phoenix at 1-1, avenging its loss to the maroon and gold last year.
Gustavo Atencio and Jahmir Flowers made their season debuts for the Phoenix with both players playing 17 minutes in the match.
