Volleyball Travels to Duke Tuesday Night

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University volleyball team travels to Duke this Tuesday, Sept. 5 to take on the Blue Devils at 6:30 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
  • Elon went 1-2 last weekend at the Wofford Invitational.
  • Georgia State swept Elon in the first match of the tournament. After the Panthers won the first two sets 25-17 and 25-22, the Phoenix rallied in the third before losing it 26-24 to end the match.
  • The maroon and gold came out on fire in the second match against South Carolina State winning the first set 25-12. Elon won the final two sets 25-15 and 25-16 to earn its first victory of the season.
  • Tournament host, Wofford swept the Phoenix to close out the tournament. The Phoenix fought hard in the first and second set, ultimately losing both 25-20. The Terriers took the third set 25-17 to win the match.
  • Jordan Gower was named to the All-Tournament Team after leading the team in digs (45) and digs per set (5.0).

PHOENIX FACTS
  • Gower leads the CAA in digs (94) and digs per set (4.70) this season. She has three 20-dig performances this year.
  • Freshman, Jessica Parker leads the team in assists (103) and service aces (8).
  • Cameron Lanier paces the Phoenix in kills (52). Lanier posted a career-high 14 kills in their match against Georgia State last weekend.
  • Middle Blocker, Lindsey Harris leads the maroon and gold in blocks (13.0). In Elon's last match against Wofford, Harris tied her career-high in kills with 5 and recorded a season-high hitting percentage (.364).

PRESEASON POLL & ALL-CAA TEAM
  • Elon was selected to finish seventh in the 2023 CAA Preseason Poll. Defending champion Towson ranked first in the poll, earning 11 first-place votes.  
  • Gower was tabbed as an honorable mention to the Preseason All-CAA Team. The Raleigh, N.C. native led the conference in digs per set (4.57) and was No. 4 in digs (439) last season. 
  • Rising junior Sydney Love also was named an All-CAA Preseason Honorable Mention. The Chesapeake, Va. native led all CAA outside hitters in blocks and blocks per set in the 2022 season.

THE SERIES
  • Elon leads the all-time series against Duke 8-6. However, the Phoenix has not defeated the Blue Devils since 1974.
  • Duke won the last meeting between the teams on Sept. 6, 2022, in four sets.

SCOUTING DUKE
  • Duke holds a 3-2 record entering the matchup and is currently on a three-match winning streak after a win in the Reamer Club Xtra Special Premier and a pair of home victories against Loyola Maryland and West Virginia.
  • Duke was tabbed to finish seventh in the ACC Preseason Poll.
  • Graduate Student Gracie Johnson was selected to the 2023 Preseason All-ACC Team and ranks No. 2 in league in service aces with 12 so far this season.
  • Outside hitter, Kerry Keefe ranks No. 3 in the league in kills so far this season with 73 and in points with 80.5. She was named ACC Offensive Player of the Week after a career-high 24-kill performance hitting .538 against Loyola Maryland and 18 kills against West Virginia last weekend.
  • The Blue Devils rank third in the league in digs (286) and assists (242).
  • Duke is coached by Jolene Nagel, who is in her 25th season with the program.

UP NEXT
  • The Phoenix will host the Phoenix Volley for Unity tournament next Friday-Sunday, Sept. 8-10 at Schar Center. Elon will face Western Carolina on Friday at 6 p.m. A neutral site match between Western Carolina and NC Central will take place Saturday at 4 p.m. The Phoenix with close out the tournament in a 2 p.m. matchup against the Eagles.
