Phoenix Clipped In Thrilling Match At North Florida

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A final-set tiebreak on the last singles court to finish produced the decisive point in Sunday's match between the Elon University women's tennis team and North Florida, with the Ospreys prevailing to narrowly secure a thrilling 4-3 victory.

Elon bounced back after losing the doubles point to get within a point of winning the match. With the victory, the Ospreys improve to 3-1 on the season while the Phoenix falls to 1-3.

"The team fought incredibly hard today and Mariana, Lizette and Helen had very gutsy wins," head coach Elizabeth Anderson said. "We came up just a little bit short but I am extremely proud of the way the team competed. Although the results from this weekend were not what we were hoping for, the experience we gained will help us tremendously. We now have some time to try to get healthier and look forward to preparing for the opportunities ahead."

THE RUNDOWN
  • The Ospreys earned the doubles point with wins at the Nos. 2 and 3 spots.
  • Mariana Reding got the Phoenix on the board with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles against North Florida's Sofia Snitko in the first match to finish. The win is Mariana's second straight in completed decisions, with both coming in straight sets at the No. 5 spot.
  • Older sister Lizette Reding moved Elon ahead 2-1 with a straight sets win of her own on Court 2 against Anslee Long. The reigning CAA Player of the Week won 6-4, 6-2 for her 41st career singles victory. The Reding sisters have combined for four of Elon's seven singles wins this season.
  • After North Florida tied the match at 2-2 with a win at the No. 1 spot, Helen Sarikulaya scratched out a tight three-set victory to put Elon back in front. The sophomore rebounded after dropping the second set to win 6-0, 1-6, 6-3 against Alisa Lyshko. It was Sarikulaya's first win of the season and the third of her career in a full final set.
  • Playing the No. 3 position, Miray Konar battled from behind to win her second set against Kendall Nash 7-5, taking the match into a decisive third set. After the Ospreys won on Court 6, Konar and Nash's match became the pivotal point both teams needed for victory. Konar went up an early break but Nash came back to force a tiebreak, which she won 7-4 to secure an Ospreys triumph.
