Elon, N.C. – High Point scored in the 11
th minute and held the No. 17 Elon men's soccer team without a shot on goal in a 1-0 victory Tuesday night at Rudd Field.
Elon did outshoot High Point 7-5 but quality chances were limited throughout. High Point had just three shots on goal and the two teams combined for only five corner kicks, three by the Panthers.
High Point won its fifth straight match to improve to 5-2-2 and Elon falls to 7-2-1 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Just 80 seconds into play, High Point appeared to go ahead on a one-time strike following a cross, but the Panthers were called for offsides and the game remained scoreless.
- Following that near-goal, Elon turned up the energy, maintaining constant pressure in the offensive end for much of the next 10 minutes.
- High Point, though, did break the scoreless tie in the 11th minute after a failed clear. Alfred Baafi's strike gave the Panthers the 1-0 lead.
- The score remained that way through halftime although Elon outshot High Point 5-2 and had the only two corner kicks of the first period.
- Elon's best chance for an equalizer in the second half came in the 64th minute, as Majaliwa Msabaha's long try went just wide of net.
NOTES AND STATS
- Elon lost at home for the first time in 2024, dropping to 5-1 on the season. High Point improved to 1-2-1 on the road.
- The Phoenix entered the night ranked No. 11 in the country in scoring offense at 2.44 goals per game, but were shut out for the first time in 2024.
- Scott Vatne had a match-high three shots for Elon.
- Tomasz Wroblewski made two saves in goal for the Phoenix.
- The physical contest saw 22 total fouls, 14 of which were committed by High Point.
