Elon Falls In Final Regular Season Contest At Delaware

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University volleyball team fell 3-0 in their final regular season match to Delaware on Saturday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Elon opened the first set with a 5-2 lead before Delaware responded with a 4-0 run to narrow the gap to 6-5. The Phoenix answered with three straight points, featuring kills from Cameron Lanier and Anna Sewell and a block by Caroline Berlekamp, to reclaim the lead at 8-6. The teams traded points until Delaware went on a 5-0 run, pulling ahead 14-10. Elon closed the gap to three at 17-14, but a 3-0 spurt from the Blue Hens extended their lead to 20-15. Despite trading points late in the set, Delaware secured the opening frame 25-19.
  • Delaware jumped out to a 5-2 lead and extended their advantage to 12-6. Elon responded with a 5-2 run to close the gap to 14-12, but a 3-1 run from the Blue Hens pushed their lead to 17-13. The Phoenix battled back to get within two at 21-19, but Delaware finished with four consecutive points to take the second set 25-19.
  • Delaware took an early 6-2 lead and extended it to 10-5 before Elon responded with a 5-2 run to trim the deficit to 12-10. The Blue Hens answered with three consecutive points, prompting an Elon timeout at 15-10. Out of the break, following a Delaware ace, back-to-back Phoenix kills brought Elon within four at 16-12. Delaware pushed their lead to 18-12, but a 5-2 run by Elon narrowed the gap to 20-17. The Blue Hens then closed the set and the match with a decisive 5-0 run, winning 25-17.
