Late Elon Comeback Against Stony Brook Falls Short In CAA Semifinals

Stony Brook, N.Y.- Sophomore forward Lauren McCauley found the back of the net with just under three minutes to play in the 2024 CAA Women's Soccer Championships Semifinal to give the Elon Phoenix (13-4-1) life. The one goal would not be enough as Elon fell to the Stony Brook Sea Wolves (13-3-3) 2-1 Sunday afternoon.

The loss to Stony Brook marks an end to a historic Elon women's soccer season with the 2024 squad finishing with 13 wins, the most in Elon's Division I history. The 13 wins are the most by the program since 1995. It's seven conference wins are the most since 2009 and the most in Elon's CAA era. The turnaround from three wins to 13 wins is one of the largest in the NCAA in the last three seasons.

How It Happened
  • Both teams fired shots off target in the first ten minutes with Isa Murdock firing the first shot of the game for Elon.
  • Katie Bisgrove made a pair of saves midway through the first half to keep the score 0-0.
  • After a foul in the box, the Sea Wolves converted from the spot to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Stony Brook would add a second on a headed effort to take a 2-0 lead into the half.
  • Bisgrove continued her fine performance in goal with more saves to begin the second half.
  • Elon's first shot on goal came from Kennedy Jones on a free kick but the effort was saved.
  • The Phoenix got back into the match when a surging ball from Kennedy Jones found the feet of Lauren McCauley in the box who finished it on the volley to halve the deficit.
  • The McCauley goal would not be enough as Stony Brook held on for the 2-1 win.
