Elon Cruises Past Gardner-Webb For 6-1 Victory

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women's tennis team won its second straight match at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on Friday, as the Phoenix defeated Gardner-Webb 6-1.

The Phoenix won eight of the nine matches played across doubles and singles and went 15-1 in total sets. With the victory, Elon is now 3-4 on the season while the Runnin' Bulldogs fall to 1-3. 
 

 
THE RUNDOWN
  • Elon extended its streak of successful doubles points to three with a trio of victories. 
  • Playing the No. 1 doubles position, Sibel Tanik and Lizette Reding won 6-1 for their second victory of the season. Elon's top duo has now won 26 matches together over the last three seasons. 
  • For the second time this season, Simone Bergeron and Ella Suk secured the doubles point for the Phoenix at the No. 3 spot, as the two freshmen won 6-3. Bergeron and Suk have won all three of their doubles attempts together this season. 
  • On Court 2, Madison Cordisco and Mariana Reding improved to 4-2 on the season together with a hard-fought 7-5 win. Their four victories lead the team, as the tandem has won three in a row. 
  • This was the second time this season Elon has won all three doubles courts, with the other coming against Longwood on Jan. 19. 
  • Gardner-Webb tied the score at 1-1 with a win at No. 3 singles. 
  • Helen Sarikulaya quickly answered with a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Gardner-Webb's Katie Watts at the No. 6 spot for her third win of the season. The sophomore has won her last two singles results, with both coming at the No. 6 slot. 
  • Mariana Reding moved the Phoenix ahead 3-1 with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Courtney Fyvie on Court 5. All four of her singles wins this season have come in straight sets.
  • In her first Elon appearance at No. 4 singles, Miray Konar dropped just four games on her way to defeating Milicia Prokic 6-0, 6-4. Konar has now won back-to-back contests.  
  • Tanik posted the winning point for the maroon and gold with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph against Emilia Roslund on Court 1. It was Tanik's first straight-sets victory of the season. 
  • In the final match to finish on Court 2, Lizette Reding battled past Emma Shasteen 6-3, 6-3. The Reding sisters lead the team with four singles victories a piece. 
  • With the win, Elon is now 8-0 all-time against the Runnin' Bulldogs in home matches.

The Phoenix returns to the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center tomorrow for a 1 p.m. match against Shaw.
