JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Playing on leap day for the first time in the 21^st century, the Elon University men's tennis team defeated East Tennessee State 4-1 on Thursday for its first road victory of the season.

The win was also Elon's first in seven tries against the Buccaneers, as East Tennessee State had gotten the better of the Phoenix in the first six matchups between the former conference foes. 
 
With the victory, the Phoenix improved to 6-4 on the season while the Buccaneers fell to 4-7 with the loss. 
 
THE RUNDOWN

• Elon won at the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles spots to clinch the doubles point. 
• Ben Zipay and Juan Sengariz picked up their second victory of the season playing No. 2 doubles with a 7-5 result. It was their fourth overall win as a duo. 
• Oskar Antinheimo and Jack Curtis continued their winning ways together at the No. 3 position with a 6-3 triumph. They have now won six matches together on the season. 
• The teams played clinch singles, meaning the Phoenix needed just three singles victories to take the victory. 
• In a return to the No. 2 singles position, Veljko Krstic defeated East Tennessee State's Peter Kalocsai 7-5, 6-3. The sophomore is now 4-0 at the No. 2 spot this season. 
• Juan Sengariz added his fourth singles win of the season with a 6-4, 6-3 result over Alberto Garcia on Court 4. 
• Playing the No. 5 position, Dylan Heap rounded out the singles wins for the Phoenix with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over James Sim. Heap has now won four of his last five singles appearances for the Phoenix.

 
UP NEXT
Elon returns home for a home match against Fairfield on March 6. The contest at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center is set for a 2 p.m. start.
