Ervin Reaches 200 Career Three-Pointers Versus Seawolves

ELON, N.C. – Graduate student Zac Ervin of the Elon University men's basketball team became the ninth player in school history to reach 200 career three-pointers, but the Phoenix was handed a 79-64 setback versus Stony Brook on Thursday night, Feb. 8, at Schar Center.
 
Elon (10-14, 3-8 CAA) had two players score in double figures with Sam Sherry and TK Simpkins scoring 15 points each. Simpkins had a double-double with a career-high 10 assists. Ervin hit a couple of three-pointers off the bench, giving him 201 career-made threes, which is ninth-best on the program's all-time career list.
 
Stony Brook (13-11, 6-5 CAA) had three players reach double-digits with Tyler Stephenson-Moore leading all scorers with 27 points followed by Aaron Clarke with 22. Dean Noll contributed with 14 points for the Seawolves.
 
THE RUNDOWN
• The Seawolves opened the game with an 11-3 lead through the first six minutes of the contest. A three-pointer by Ervin cut the Phoenix's deficit down to five, 11-6, with 13:38 left in the first half.
• Stony Brook saw its lead grow as large as 13 points in the first half after a Stephenson-Moore three-pointer with 7:50 left in the opening period, 25-12. Elon however went on a 14-3 run to cut its deficit down to two after a LA Pratt three-pointer made the score 28-26, with 2:55 left in the half.
• The Seawolves closed out the first period with a 7-1 run to go into the locker room with a 35-27 advantage after Clarke hit a jumper just before the first half horn.
• Stony Brook went up 54-43 with 14 minutes left in the game on a pair of free throws. Elon got it down to six, 54-48, as Isaac Harrell made a corner three with 12:16 left to play. The Seawolves however countered with a 6-0 run to move ahead 60-48 with 10:15 remaining.
• Ervin's second three of the night at the seven-minute mark, brought the Phoenix within five, 63-58. That would be as close as Elon would get however Stony Brook continued to hit timely baskets and eventually was able to pull away for the 79-64 victory.
 
NOTES
• Elon shot 40 percent from the field (23-of-57) while hitting 31 percent of its three-pointers (8-of-26). The Phoenix outscored Stony Brook in the paint, 28-24, while holding an 18-11 advantage in bench points.
• Ervin surpassed Chris Chalko on the program's career three-point list to move into ninth all-time. He sits only three triples away from tying Scottie Rice for eighth all-time.
• Simpkins becomes the second player for Elon this season to have 10 assists in a game, joining Rob Higgins, who had 10 versus IUPUI earlier this year. That total ties for the second-highest in a game in school history at the Division I level.

Elon travels to Towson for a Monday night matchup against the Tigers on Feb. 12 at 9 p.m. The game will air on the CBS Sports Network.
