Dramatic Doubles Point Proves Crucial In Elon Win Against Coastal Carolina

Following doubles, the teams split six singles matches, meaning Elon's two tiebreak victories in doubles proved to be pivotal in the win.

With the victory, Elon improved to 9-5 on the season. The Chanticleers fell to 5-8 with the loss.

THE RUNDOWN
  • All three doubles matches went to a tiebreak, with Elon prevailing in two.
  • The Chanticleers won the first match to finish on Court 1. Coastal's team defeated Juan Sengariz and Ben Zipay 7-5 in a tiebreak.
  • On Court 3, Oskar Antinheimo and Jack Curtis evened doubles with an 8-6 tiebreak victory. The duo won the last two points of the match after the 6-6 changeover. It was their team-best eighth win of the season together and the first to come in a tiebreak.
  • Playing doubles together for the first time, Dylan Heap and Veljko Krstic secured doubles for the Phoenix with a 7-5 tiebreak win on Court 2. A return winner by Heap at 5-5 set up a match point, which the duo converted. It was Heap's fifth doubles victory of the season and his first with a different partner than Daniel Martin
  • The doubles point snapped a streak of two unsuccessful conversions for the Phoenix in doubles. Elon has now won seven of eight doubles points at home.
  • This was the second time this season Elon has won a doubles point with a pair of tiebreak victories. The other came on Feb. 22 against Gardner-Webb.
  • Sengariz promptly moved Elon ahead 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Coastal Carolina's Lucas Wayenburg on Court 3. It was his fifth straight win, all of which have come in straight sets. In those 10 winning sets, he has lost more than three games just twice.
  • In the next match to finish, Krstic defeated Ryuya Ata 6-1, 6-2 for his ninth singles win of the season. Five of the victories have come at the No. 1 spot, as the sophomore improved his record at the position to 5-5 this season. This was the third time this season Krstic has won a singles match losing three or fewer games.
  • After Coastal Carolina won matches on Courts 4 and 6, Curtis secured the winning point for the Phoenix with a 7-5, 6-0 triumph at the No. 5 position against Maj Tomac. With the result, Curtis pulled even with his doubles partner Antinheimo for the team lead in wins with 10. The freshman is 6-0 on the season playing No. 5 singles and is 14-1 across doubles and singles at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
  • Elon improved to 7-1 on the season at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center with the win.
