Pirates Overtake Phoenix on the Road

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Elon University softball fell on the road at East Carolina, 9-1, on Tuesday evening, March 26, in a nonconference contest at Max R. Joyner Family Stadium.

Elon fell to 10-21 on the year with the setback to the Pirates while ECU improved to 24-9 overall.

AT THE PLATE
Kaitlyn Wells had her first home run of the season, accounting for one of the Phoenix's three hits on the day. Allee Seering went 2-of-2 with a double for the maroon and gold.

IN THE CIRCLE
Meredith Wells was credited with the loss after pitching 3.0 innings and allowing three earned runs off six hits.

THE RUNDOWN
• The Pirates took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. ECU had its leadoff runner reach on a single before another batter reached off a Phoenix error. Both players advanced into scoring position on a sac bunt before a single sac fly and a single to left drove both runners in as ECU took a 2-0 advantage.
• Elon got a run back in the top of the third. Kaitlyn Wells worked a 2-0 count before connecting on her first home run of the year to start the top of the inning to cut the Phoenix's deficit to one, 2-1.
• ECU got a run back in the home half of the third. The Pirates had three straight singles to start the inning with Anna Sawyer scoring on an RBI single from Morgan Johnson to put Elon back down by two, 3-1. A sac fly brought in another runner for the Pirates as ECU went into the fourth inning up 4-1.
• A solo home run by Sawyer in the fourth put the Pirates ahead 5-1. After both teams went scoreless in the fifth, ECU put up a four-spot in the bottom of the sixth, ending the game with the 9-1 victory.

ON DECK
The Phoenix continues its road swing with a CAA series at College of Charleston on March 28-30.
