Softball Completes Series Sweep Over Cougars

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The Elon University softball team completed its CAA series sweep at College of Charleston, culminating with a 13-2 victory on Saturday afternoon, March 30, at the Patriots Point Athletic Complex.

Elon (13-21, 7-5 CAA) won its fourth straight CAA game overall and has won four of the past five games. Charleston fell to 8-22 on the season and 2-10 in the CAA.

AT THE PLATE
• The Phoenix scored double-digit runs for the third straight game while having eight hits in the contest. Gabi Schaal went 2-of-3 to lead Elon at the plate while driving in three runs. Reagan Hartley, Allee Seering and Mauri Murray also drove in two RBI for the Phoenix.

IN THE CIRCLE
McKenna McCard had the complete game win for the Phoenix, improving to 5-4 on the season. The junior pitched 5.0 innings with three hits and two runs allowed with three strikeouts.

THE RUNDOWN
• The Phoenix scored first in the top of the opening frame. Megan Grant reached on a leadoff double and advanced to third on a fielder's choice and an error. She would score on an RBI from Seering to give Elon a 1-0 lead.
• The Cougars came back to take the lead in the home half of the first. Charleston had a runner reach on a walk before hitting a two-run home run to go ahead 2-1.
• Elon responded with a three-run top of the second. The Phoenix loaded the bases in the top of the second before Hartley drove in a pair of runs on a single to right field. A bunt single by Murray surprised the defense as Grant scored another run to give Elon the 4-2 advantage.
• The Phoenix added two more runs in the top of the third. Kaitlyn Wells reached on a one-out walk before Schaal drove her home on a double to left center. Schaal advanced to third on an error before crossing home plate on a Greta Heesenthaler single up the middle to make the score 6-2.
• A six-run top of the fourth broke the game open for the Phoenix. Schaal caused the most damage as she added her second double of the game, with the two-bagger driving in a pair. Elon held a 12-2 advantage after the fourth.
Anna Dew tacked on the final run for the Phoenix in the top of the fifth on a two-out single to left center. McCard retired the side in the bottom of the fifth to help Elon close out the sweep with the 13-2 win.
