TOWSON, Md. – Junior
McKenna McCard tossed a one-hit complete game shutout as the Elon University softball team earned a 6-0 victory at Towson on Sunday afternoon, April 14, in the CAA rubber match at Tiger Softball Stadium.
Elon (16-25, 10-8 CAA) was able to recover from its game two loss to the Tigers (16-26, 6-12 CAA) and earn the series win. It is the third series win of the season for the Phoenix while improving its overall ledger versus Towson to 16-15.
IN THE CIRCLE
• McCard added her second shutout of the weekend with the Ashburn, Ga., native allowing the lone hit while striking out a pair of batters. McCard ended the weekend with a 2-0 record, with an 0.00 ERA, nine strikeouts in 12.0 innings of action.
AT THE PLATE
• Elon had nine hits as a team with
Reagan Hartley going 2-of-4 with to pace the Phoenix offense. She also was one of six players with an RBI for the maroon and gold while adding a double to her stat line.
Mauri Murray and
Drew Menscer also added extra-base hits with a double and a triple, respectively.
THE RUNDOWN
• Elon scored the first run of the game in the top of the first. Murray reached on a two-out double to right before she scored on an RBI single from Davis to put the Phoenix up 1-0 early.
• The Phoenix put up a three-spot in the top of the second.
Greta Hessenthaler led off with a single and moved to second after a walk to
Kaitlyn Wells. The pair advanced to scoring position after a sac but before Grant drove in a run on an RBI single to left field with Wells advancing to third. Grant then stole second before a single by
Reagan Hartley added the second run of the frame to push Wells home. Grant took her place at third with
Mauri Murray coming to the plate. A sac fly by Murray to center enabled Grant to come home and the Phoenix took a 4-0 advantage into the third.
• Hessenthaler helped the Phoenix score a couple more runs in the top of the third. The freshman reached on a fielder's choice before a wild pitch advanced her to second. She would score on a Wells single up the middle before an RBI triple by Menscer added the sixth run of the game for Elon, who took a 6-0 advantage over the Tigers.
• Elon's offense was quieted after Towson made a pitching change in the top of the fourth, but McCard still held the Tigers' from threatening the Phoenix. McCard's lone blemish of the game came in the bottom of the fourth as she allowed a two-out hit to the Tigers, but McCard and the Phoenix defense quickly recovered with a fly out to end the inning.
• Towson only had one more base runner reach for the remainder of the game, which came off a Phoenix error in the bottom of the sixth. McCard however continued to cruise through the Tigers' lineup, eventually earning her third shutout of the season.

Elon is back at home next weekend, April 19-21, hosting Hampton at Hunt Softball Park for its next CAA series.
