Elon Outlasts Campbell In Late-Night Thriller To Survive And Advance At CAA Tournament

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – After falling behind 3-1 on Friday night in the quarterfinals of the CAA Tournament against No. 6 seeded Campbell, the Elon University men's tennis team won the final three singles contests to complete a dramatic comeback just before the clock struck 11 p.m.

Dylan Heap and Juan Sengariz began Elon's comeback, knotting the match at 3-3 to set the stage for sophomore Oskar Antinheimo in the last match to finish. Antinheimo saved multiple match points in a third set and ultimately prevailed in a back-and-forth tiebreak to extend Elon's season.

With the victory, the No. 3 seeded Phoenix improved to 15-7 on the season and advanced to Saturday's semifinal round. Campbell finishes its season with a 13-8 record.

THE RUNDOWN
  • The match began outdoors at William & Mary's Mackesy Tennis Center. However, a few games into doubles, rain began to fall, forcing the match to be concluded indoors at the McCormack-Nagelsen Indoor Tennis Center.
  • Dylan Heap and Veljko Krstic raced out to an early 4-1 lead outdoors and won two more games indoors for a 6-3 victory at the No. 2 spot. The duo improved to 5-1 on the season with the win and has now won four straight contests.
  • The Camels won on Court 3 to even doubles at one match apiece.
  • Playing on Court 1, Juan Sengariz and Ben Zipay secured a late break to go up 5-4. Sengariz served out an Elon win in the next game to clinch an important doubles point for the Phoenix. It was their 10th victory as a tandem this season and the eighth to come at the No. 1 spot. They became the second Elon duo to reach double-digit victories this season.
  • Elon has now won the doubles point in all four of its matches against conference opponents this season. The Phoenix also won at the No. 1 spot to secure the doubles point against Campbell in the regular season on Feb. 17.
  • Campbell won the first three singles matches to finish to go ahead 3-1.
  • Making his first appearance of the season at No. 6 singles, Heap battled past Campbell's Luke Tollenaar 7-6 (5), 6-0 to cut Elon's deficit to 3-2. It was Heap's fourth straight singles victory and his ninth this season.
  • Back at the No. 4 singles spot for the first time since March 12, Sengariz posted a key point for the Phoenix with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 triumph over Tomas Balazi. Sengariz broke in the sixth game of the final set to go ahead 4-2, and then after losing a 40-0 lead in the ensuing game, he won the deuce point to consolidate for 5-2. He then broke serve again in the next game to tie the overall match score at 3-3.
  • The win tied Sengariz for the team lead with 15. It was his first match to go the distance since Feb. 18 and was his second victory in a final set this season.
  • The outcome of the match rested on Oskar Antinheimo's shoulders following the wins by Heap and Sengariz. After splitting the first two sets, Antinheimo was broken late in the set and trailed Lukas Steffen 5-4. However, he got to 30-40 in the next Steffen service game. Steffen won that point to take the game to deuce but Antinheimo staved off the match point to keep Elon's season alive.
  • Antinheimo held his serve in the next game to go up 6-5. After the changeover, Steffen held as well to force a decisive tiebreak. Steffen sprinted out to a 5-3 lead before Antinheimo won the next two points to level the score at 5-5. However, Antinheimo lost the next point and faced his second match point, this time on his serve. He converted his first serve and Steffen was unable to return it as Antinheimo successfully stayed alive again.
  • After changing sides again, Antinheimo won his next service point to give him his first match point. The sophomore lobbed Steffen on the fourth shot of the point and it landed for a winner to clinch a thrilling win.
  • It was the second time Antinheimo has won a match after saving match point this season, as he also did so against Gardner-Webb on Feb. 22 in a 4-3 win. Antinheimo was also the decisive point in a 4-3 victory against William & Mary on March 25, winning in the final match to finish in a second-set tiebreak.
  • The victory was Antinheimo's 15th this season as he is now tied with Jack Curtis and Sengariz for the most on the team. It was his fourth win in either a full final set or match tiebreak this season. It was also his second win in a third-set tiebreak along with his victory over Gardner-Webb.
  • The victory was Elon's third this season to come by a 4-3 score.
  • This was just Elon's second 4-3 victory in the CAA Tournament, the other being the championship match in 2019 when the Phoenix defeated UNCW.
  • With the victory, Elon has now won at least one match in all eight of its CAA Tournament appearances.
  • The Phoenix improved to 4-0 this season against conference opponents with the victory.
  • The win was the 299th in the career of head coach Michael Leonard.

UP NEXT
  • Elon will face No. 2 Delaware on Saturday in the semifinals at 3 p.m. The match is scheduled to be played outdoors at the Mackesy Tennis Center.
  • Delaware held on for a 4-2 victory against No. 7 seeded Drexel on Friday in the quarterfinals.
  • The Blue Hens enter Saturday's match with a 16-3 record on the season. Delaware is 5-1 on the season against CAA competition and has racked up several impressive non-conference victories, including Penn State, Georgetown and Villanova.
  • Delaware is currently ranked No. 71 in the ITA rankings. Saturday's match will be their second ever appearance in the CAA Tournament semifinals.
  • The Blue Hens are led by head coach Marc Pibernat.
