Seawolves Win Rubber Match Over Phoenix

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Elon University softball team was handed an 8-1 setback at Stony Brook in a CAA rubber match on Sunday afternoon, April 28 at University Field.

Elon falls to 20-27 on the season and is 14-10 in the CAA. Stony Brook improves to 32-14 and 17-7 in league play while earning its first-ever series win over the Phoenix.

AT THE PLATE
• Elon had seven hits total in the game as Mauri Murray and Greta Hessenthaler each went 2-of-3 at the plate to lead the Phoenix. Hessenthaler drove in the lone run of the game for Elon while Allee Seering drew a pair of walks.

IN THE CIRCLE
McKenna McCard was handed her second loss of the weekend, falling to 10-7 on the season. The junior pitched 3.0 innings and allowed one earned run in the game.

THE RUNDOWN
• The Phoenix scored the first run of the game in the top of the second. Allee Seering walked to lead off the inning and then moved to second off a single. A fielder's choice gave the Phoenix runners on the corners before an RBI single from Greta Hessenthaler drove in Seering to put Elon ahead 1-0.
• Stony Brook responded with a four-run bottom of the second. The Seawolves hit a pair of two-run home runs in the frame, taking a 4-2 advantage over the maroon and gold.
• The Seawolves added to their advantage in the bottom of the fourth. Stony Brook plated a pair of runs thanks to drawing a pair of walks with the bases loaded. That put the Phoenix's deficit to 6-1 after the fourth.
• Another two runs came across the dish for the Seawolves in the bottom of the fifth. Stony Brook scored on a one-out single to first base while adding its second run of the frame on a grounder to first. The game moved to the sixth with Elon down 8-1.
• Neither team generated much offense for the remainder of the game as the Phoenix would be retired in order to fall to the Seawolves in the rubber match, 8-1.
