Elon Offense Sets The Tone, Phoenix Trounces Coastal Carolina

Conway, S.C.- For the second consecutive match, the Elon Phoenix (3-0) offense struck early and often. A pair of goals from Sumner Nenninger and Colin Veltri within the first 20 minutes gave Elon the momentum they needed to see out a 3-0 win over Coastal Carolina (0-3) Thursday night.

Nenninger netted his first career goal in the win while Colin Veltri struck for his first goal in the maroon and gold. Connor Mucchetti sealed the victory for the Phoenix in the second half with a headed goal from a Scott Vatne corner kick. Vatne finished with a pair of assists while Ryan Manna and Victor Stromsten chipped in with assists of their own.

How It Happened
  • Elon started swiftly, with the first shot of the game from Sumner Nenninger finding the back of the net. For the second consecutive game the Phoenix had grabbed a lead within the first five minutes.
  • The Phoenix pressing attack continue to cause the Chants problems when Victor Stromsten nearly doubled the lead but failed to chip the keeper.
  • After a shot from Carlos Levy, Colin Veltri found the back off the net off a sweet move inside with his right foot.
  • Elon pilled on more pressure forcing weak shot attempts from Coastal Carolina and continued to find the target.
  • The Phoenix would take a 2-0 lead into the half before a Chanticleer was sent to the dressing room with a red card. Coastal would attempt to find an offensive push down to ten men.
  • Elon began the second half with a flurry of set pieces to start the period strong.
  • On their third corner kick of the half, the persistence paid off. Vatne floated a ball over the fingertips of the goalkeeper and found the head of Connor Mucchetti who headed the ball over the line before it was kicked into the top of the net.
  • With the 3-0 advantage, the Phoenix were able to utilize fresh legs and their depth to see out the 3-0 win on the road.
