Spartanburg, S.C.- After last night's postponement, the Elon Phoenix (3-0) offense came out hot with four first half goals to push past the Wofford Terriers (1-4) Monday morning, 4-2. This is Elon's third straight win to start the season and matches Elon's win total from a season ago.
Isa Murdock and
Gabby Hoschek shared the spoils in the first half with both players collecting a goal and an assist in the first 45 minutes. Murdock would find the back of the net again before
Kennedy Jones found herself on the scoresheet in the win.
How It Happened
- Elon started fast with a number of efforts from Lydia Totten up top and in the box. Totten fired four shots in the first ten minutes but could not find the back of the net.
- After extended pressure from the Phoenix, Elon found the back of the net with an effort from Gabby Hoschek at close range in the 12th minute.
- The Phoenix found the back of the net again in quick succession. Hoschek would be on the helping end of the next goal with Isa Murdock finding the bottom left corner of the goal from seven yards out.
- Wofford pounced on an Elon turnover and found the back of the net in the 17th minute to halve the Elon lead.
- The lead would once again grow to two when Kennedy Jones found the back of the net, beating the Terrier keeper to her right hand and into the center of the goal.
- The Phoenix continued to pepper the midfield with pressure, and it led to another break with Isa Murdock at the top. After a through ball from Hoschek, Isa Murdock beat the goalkeeper and found the top of the net to stretch Elon's lead to three for the first time.
- Wofford were able to break through again in the 69th minute for a goal from a deflection to once again, halve the deficit.
- Murdock nearly found her first career hat trick in the 79th minute but her outside of the box effort was saved out for a corner kick.
- Elon would see out the game with spells of possession in Wofford's defensive half to claim a 4-2 against the Terriers.
Notes and Stats
- The Phoenix have started 3-0 for the first time since 2019.
- The four goals are Elon's highest offensive output since Elon put nine past Hampton last season. It is also the highest road output since Elon put eight goals in the back of the net on the road at Hampton.
- Isa Murdock put together a two goal, one assist performance this afternoon. The five points are the most in a single game in her career. Her three goals lead the team and match her season high from 2022.
- Gabby Hoschek put together a four-point performance on her birthday. Hoschek's game winning goal sees her score in back-to-back games against Wofford after finding the back of the net against the Terriers in Elon's home opener last season.
- Kennedy Jones found the back of the net for the first time since 2022 against Charleston.
- Lydia Totten picked up her first assist of the season in the win Monday.
- Anna Hamner made her first start in goal of the season. Hamner picked up the win to along with a single save.
- Rachel Buckle, Jessica Hill and Katie Lowe all played 90 minutes on the backline.
