Volleyball Welcomes Charleston For First Home CAA Series

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University volleyball team (6-5) is set to host its first home CAA series of the season against College of Charleston (7-4) on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's match will start at noon and Sunday's match will begin at 1:00 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
  • Elon went 2-1 last weekend at the Mercer Invitational. The maroon and gold fell to Mercer before defeating Presbyterian and Southern Mississippi.
  • Mercer swept Elon on Friday afternoon, where Annabelle Schall led the team in assists (11) and digs (8), and Cameron Lanier led in kills with nine.
  • On Friday evening, the Phoenix defeated Presbyterian in five sets. Three Elon players, Sydney Love (14), Lanier (13), and Clara LaRue (13), reached double-digit kills.
  • As a team, the Phoenix stated a season-high 10 aces against the Blue Hose. 
  • The Phoenix closed the tournament with a five-set victory over Southern Mississippi, recording their second-highest kill performance of the season with 68.
  • Schall recorded two double-doubles on the weekend. In the match against Presbyterian, she tallied 22 assists and 14 digs, and against Southern Mississippi, she had 33 assists and 10 digs.
  • Kayla Palmer recorded a career-high 22 assists in Saturday's match, while Catherine Rucker added career-highs in kills (10) and blocks (5).
PHOENIX FACTS 
  • Sydney Love leads the CAA with 142 kills and ranks No. 4 in kills per set with 3.46.
  • Annabelle Schall ranks fourth in the league in aces per set at 0.54 and recorded a season-high four aces last weekend against Southern Mississippi. Schall also is sixth in the league in assists per set with 5.83.
  • Caroline Berlekamp continues to lead the CAA in hitting percentage with a .373.
  • Caroline Doyle leads the conference with 170 digs and ranks seventh in digs per set at 4.05.
  • Elon leads the CAA in assists at 493 and ranks No. 4 in kills per set at 12.38.
THE SERIES
  • College of Charleston leads the all-time series over the Phoenix 35-6.
  • Elon won the last home contest against the Cougars in five sets on October 23, 2022, but most recently fell on the road in five sets on October 22, 2023.
SCOUTING COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON
  • Charleston is 7-4 overall this season, compiling a 6-1 record at home and 0-2 on the road.
  • Last season, the Cougars went 14-16 finishing fifth in the league, and fell to Stony Brook in the opening round of the CAA Championship.
  • The Cougars were picked to finish third in the 2024 CAA Preseason Poll with three first-place votes.
  • Middle blocker Allie Holland and outside hitter/defensive specialist Tynley Smeltzer were named to the 2024 Preseason All-CAA Team, with Emily Banitt earning honorable mention accolades.
  • Smeltzer ranks No. 3 in the conference in digs per set at 4.33 and leads the team in aces with eight on the season.
  • Caitlyn Callahan leads the CAA in blocks per set with 1.38 and is second in hitting percentage at .353.
  • Hannah Scott leads the Cougars in assists with 293 and ranks fifth in the league with 8.14 assists per set.
  • Jason Kepner is in his 18th season as the head coach of the program.

  • The maroon and gold hit the road to UNCW next Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 28-29. Saturday's match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. while Sunday's match is set to start at 2 p.m.
