A Dominant Fifth Set Pushes Volleyball Past N.C. Central

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University volleyball team only allowed three points to N.C. Central in the fifth set to win their first game of the day against the Eagles.

Elon 3, N.C. Central 2 (23-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-13, 15-3)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • N.C. Central led 5-3 to start the opening set. Elon responded by tying the score at 6-6, but a 7-3 run from the Eagles put them back on top 13-9 forcing an Elon timeout. N.C. Central extended their lead to 17-11 before Elon regrouped to get within two at 18-16. Elon won six of the next ten points to tie the score at 22-22. The Phoenix only rallied off one more point and the Eagles took the first set 25-23.
  • No team could pull ahead in the second with neither team leading by more than one until midway through the frame. With the score knotted at 11-11, N.C. Central went on a 3-1 run to gain the biggest lead of the set at 14-12. Elon fought back to tie the score again at 18-18. The Phoenix did not look back, as two straight Phoenix kills and a service ace from Keira Kasten put the team ahead 21-18. The Eagles got within one at 23-22 but that is as close as they would get as a kill and an ace from Sydney Love ended the second set with Elon winning 25-22.
  • The Eagles came out to a 5-2 lead to start the third and further extended the lead to 9-5 later in the set. Elon won eight of the next 11 points to take the lead 13-12. N.C. Central quickly gained back the lead and pulled ahead 19-16. Late in the set, the Phoenix got within one at 20-19 but would only score one more time, and the Eagles took set three 25-20.
  • Elon responded to open the fourth set leading the Eagles 7-4. Later, the Phoenix extended their lead even further winning three straight points to go up 12-6. With strong momentum, Elon went on a 7-2 run to hold a 19-8 advantage late in the set. N.C. Central put together a 4-1 run of their own to chip away at the Elon lead but back-to-back aces from Annabelle Schall gave set point to the Phoenix. A kill from Love ended the set seeing Elon win 25-13, forcing a fifth set.
  • Everything continued to go right for Elon in set five with the Phoenix coming out to a strong 8-1 lead to switch sides of the court. From there Elon only allowed two more points before back-to-back N.C. Central errors ended the set and match with the Phoenix on top 15-3.
