THE RUNDOWN
- Elon opened the first set with a 5-2 lead and held an 8-5 advantage before the Aggies rallied to take a 10-9 lead. The Phoenix responded with three straight points to regain control and stayed in front despite several ties, becoming the first team to reach 20 points at 20-18. The hosts extended their lead to 22-18, but N.C. A&T remained close and, after several back-and-forth exchanges, earned set point at 29-28 before a block secured the first set.
- In the second set, the Phoenix once again took an early lead at 6-3 and remained in front 12-10 before the Aggies responded with a 3-0 run to move ahead 13-12. After a Cameron Lanier kill tied the set at 13-all, N.C. A&T went on a 6-1 run to build a 19-14 advantage. Elon battled back to cut the deficit to one at 19-18, but the Aggies regained momentum to extend their lead to 22-19. The Phoenix answered with a 3-0 spurt to knot the score at 22-all and tied it again at 24-24 on a Catherine Rucker kill. However, back-to-back kills from Ross closed out the set in favor of the Aggies, who took a 2-0 match lead with the 26-24 win.
- The Aggies were the first to reach double digits in the third set, taking a 10-7 lead following a Ross kill. N.C. A&T extended its advantage to 17-12, prompting a Phoenix timeout. Elon responded by closing the gap to 18-15 behind a pair of kills from Carlsen, but the Aggies held firm, pushing their lead to 21-16 and forcing another Phoenix timeout. The break did little to slow N.C. A&T's momentum, as the Aggies continued their strong finish to complete the sweep with a 25-20 victory in the final set.Â
