DURHAM, N.C. – The Elon University men's soccer team (5-2-5) picked up another draw against a top 10 opponent Tuesday night, finishing with a 1-1 tie against No. 7 Duke (7-0-4) at Koskinen Stadium.
Jahmir Flowers scored in the 23rd minute on Elon's first shot attempt of the opening half to give the Phoenix the lead. The Blue Devils equalized late to secure a draw and remain unbeaten on the season. In goal,
Jackson Leavitt made five saves as Elon held the nation's top scoring offense entering Tuesday to just six shots on goal.
The draw was Elon's second against a top 10 opponent in the last three matches, as the Phoenix also tied then No. 10 UNCG on Sept. 30.
How It Happened
- Leavitt made a pair of crucial early saves to keep the Blue Devils scoreless, including an impressive one-handed stop on a point-blank shot from Duke's Aridon Racaj in the sixth minute,
- Duke attempted the first four shots of the match in the opening 16 minutes but could not break through for a goal.
- Elon capitalized on its first shot of the night to take a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute. Oscar Tonidandel sprung Flowers with a precise pass from the midfield, and after evading Eryk Dymora, Duke's goalkeeper, with a touch into the right side of the box, he rolled in the ball into the net toward the far post for the game's first tally.
- The Blue Devils took six more shots before halftime, with only one finding the target which Leavitt handled. The Phoenix took a 1-0 lead into the break.
- Elon fended off a salvo of Duke shots and dangerous free kicks in the opening minutes of the second half to keep the Blue Devils off the scoreboard.
- Duke went down a man in the 70th minute when Aleksandar Vukovic took down Dominik Renz on a sprint toward the box, picking up a red card.
- Despite being down a man, the Blue Devils pressured Elon's back line in the final stages of the contest. In the 84th minute, Thomas Vold finally put Duke on the board, tying the score at 1-1.
- Leavitt made two more saves after Duke's goal to secure the tie for the Phoenix.
Notes & Numbers
- Flowers' goal was his first of the season and the third of his career. It came on Elon's first and only shot of the first half.
- Duke outshot Elon, 21-2, on the night but the Phoenix limited the Blue Devils to just six shots on goal.
- The Blue Devils entered Tuesday scoring 3.2 goals per contest but the Phoenix held them scoreless for the first 83 minutes.
- Carlos Levy, Majaliwa Msabaha and Charlie Kitch all played the full 90 minutes for the Phoenix.
- This was Elon's second tie against a top 10 team this season. This is the first time the Phoenix has posted multiple wins or ties against ranked opponents in a single season since 2015.
