Phoenix Advances To CAA Championship Match

Elon Knocks Off Top-Seeded UNCW In Penalty Kicks

WILMINGTON – Isabel DiPrima buried Elon's sixth consecutive penalty kick and moments later the crossbar sent the Phoenix soaring into the CAA Women's Soccer Championship match with a 6-5 penalty shootout victory at UNCW on Sunday afternoon in the conference semifinal.

Despite a tense, scoreless 110 minutes of regulation and overtime, Elon (11-2-6, 4-2-3 CAA) stayed composed behind a career-best 12 saves from goalkeeper Katie Bisgrove and a perfect showing offensively in penalties.

The win sends the Phoenix to its first CAA Championship appearance since spring 2021, where it will face Stony Brook on Sunday, Nov. 9, for the league title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

How It Happened
  • The Seahawks (11-4-3) earned a penalty kick opportunity in the third minute of the match, but Hailey Longwell's shot deflected off the left post to keep the contest scoreless.
  • Elon withstood a 45-minute offensive onslaught from UNCW in the first half as Katie Bisgrove totaled six saves on 10 total Seahawk shots.
  • The Phoenix flipped offensive momentum in the second half, out-shooting UNCW 14-3, but could not find the back of the net.
  • Both squads mustered four shots across 20 overtime minutes. Bisgrove came up with her biggest save of the day in the 99th minute, blocking a point-blank shot from inside the box with less than a minute prior to the end of the first 10-minute overtime period.
  • The Phoenix and Seahawks both started a perfect 5-for-5 in the penalty shootout. Gabby Hosheck, Ava Hellner, Ashlee Brehio, Lauren McCauley and Jess Beck netted the first five penalty-kick goals for the Phoenix before Isabel DiPrima – who did not play during the 110 minutes of regulation and overtime – calmly delivered the eventual game-winner on Elon's sixth attempt.
  • Elon's victory was clinched when UNCW's Longwell drilled the crossbar on the Seahawks' sixth attempt.

Notes & Numbers
  • The Phoenix outshot UNCW, 24-18, for the match. Elon had 14 shots in the second half compared to just three by the Seahawks.
  • Hoschek took a game-high eight shots. Brehio and Grace Gelhaus both took four.
  • Gelhaus, Hellner, Hoschek, Megan Dwyer, Jessica Hill and Alexis Pierce all logged the full 110 minutes for the Phoenix. Isa Murdock also surpassed 100 minutes, playing a career-high 104.
  • Elon improved to 6-3 all-time in the CAA Tournament. All six victories have come under head coach Neil Payne
  • The Phoenix earned its fourth win (4-15-4) against UNCW and moved to 4-3-2 in the past nine meetings with the Seahawks. This was UNCW's first loss against a CAA opponent this season.
  • Elon is now 6-0-2 in its past eight matches dating back to a 1-1 tie with UNCW on Oct. 2.
  • Bisgrove's 12 saves were three more than her previous career high of nine. The sophomore faced 18 total shots by the Seahawks.
  • This was Elon's first victory in penalty kicks since 2001, when the Phoenix defeated Coastal Carolina 4-3 in a shootout in the Big South Tournament.
