No. 37 Furman Defeats Elon 4-1

Elon, N.C. - On Sunday, the Elon women's tennis team hosted No. 37 Furman at Jimmy Powell Tennis Center for their third match of the weekend. Riding on the heels of two wins Saturday, the Phoenix's energy was high going into the match against Furman. Despite Elon's high energy, Furman came out on top, winning 4-1. The loss dropped the Phoenix to 7-3 overall, bringing Furman to 6-2 on the season. 

Doubles Recap: Even though Furman secured the doubles point, Elon did not make it easy, maintaining close scores throughout the matches. 
  • At No. 1, Miray Konar and Helen Sarikulaya kept the scores close as they faced the No. 58-ranked team of Ellie Schulson and Sara Snyder, but Furman ultimately won 6-4. 
  • At No. 2, Mariana Reding and Simone Bergeron finished first but did not go down easy. The pair faced No. 64-ranked Jess Dawson and Macy Hitchcock and showed their competitiveness by taking a 5-4 lead at one point. However, Furman won the final three games for a 7-5 win.
  • At No. 3, Lisa Kranec and Heidi Bulger kept the match close but ultimately lost to Alexa Griffith and Grace Thomas 6-4. 

Singles Recap: With many close matches, two of which went unfinished, the Phoenix kept hope alive, but Furman earned three wins for the victory.
  • At No. 1, Simone Bergeron faced Sara Snyder, losing 6-3, 6-1. 
  • At No. 2, Helen Sarikulaya and Marissa Pennings fought it out, but their match went unfinished. Sarikulaya and Pennings each won a set, and the match ended 5-7, 6-0, 1-0, with Furman taking the slight lead in the third set.
  • At No. 3, Heidi Bulger put up a great effort but was defeated by Jess Dawson, 7-6 (7), 6-2. 
  • At No. 4, Mariana Reding kept it exciting as she faced Ellie Schulson. Reding lost both sets but forced a tiebreak in the second. Furman won 6-2, 7-6 (4). 
  • At No. 5, Madison Cordisco played an unfinished match against Macy Hitchcock, which ended with Hitchcock leading 7-5, 3-2. 
  • At No. 6, Lisa Kranec put a point on the board for the Phoenix as she beat Grace Thomas 6-2, 6-3. Kranec improved to 8-1 in singles play on the year with the win.

Up next: Elon will prepare to host South Carolina State at Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on Saturday, March 1, at 1:30 p.m. South Carolina State is 1-3 on the season, with their one win being 7-0 against Benedict College. The Bulldogs beat the Phoenix last year, 4-2, but Elon goes into the match looking for redemption.
