CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Elon University softball team was handed a 13-2 setback on Wednesday evening, Feb. 26, to North Carolina at Anderson Stadium.
The loss drops the Phoenix to 5-8 on the year while North Carolina improves to 13-3.
At the Plate
• Elon was credited with two hits in the game, which came from the bats of
Chloe Hatzopoulos and
Greta Hessenthaler. Hessenthaler had a double for her base knock, her first of the year.
Allee Seering and
Kaitlyn Wells drove in RBI for Elon on a couple of sac flies.
In the Circle
•
Isley Duggins fell to 2-4 on the season after allowing two earned runs in her 2.0 innings pitched. The Burlington, N.C., native struck out four batters in the contest, which ties for the most that Duggins has had in a game this season.
The Rundown
• The Tar Heels scored four runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead. North Carolina loaded the bases with no outs, but Elon induced the next two outs and looked to escape the frame unharmed. The Tar Heels however rallied with two outs, scoring on a two-RBI single up the middle before plating two more runs off a Phoenix error.
• Elon got two runs back in the top of the third. Hatzopoulos led off with a single and was joined on the bases by Hessenthaler off an error. A pair of sac flies from Seering and
Kaitlyn Wells cut the Phoenix's deficit in half, 4-2.
• North Carolina responded with a three-run home half of the third. Another Elon error with one out led to a pair of runners crossing the dish before the Tar Heels added its third run of the frame on a two-out RBI single.
• The Tar Heels continued adding runs to their lead, scoring six more in the bottom of the fourth. Elon would get one more runner on base in the top of the fifth, but North Carolina would record the final out to earn the 13-2 win.
