ELON, N.C. – The Elon University softball team was defeated 8-2 by UConn on the second day of the Elon Softball Classic on Friday evening, Feb. 7 at Hunt Softball Park.
 
The loss dropped the Phoenix to 0-2 while UConn improved to 1-1.
 
At the Plate
• Elon had six hits in the game with Allee Seering going 3-of-4 at the plate. She also had a homer and two RBI.
 
In the Circle
• McKenna McCard took the loss in the circle for the Phoenix in her season debut. The senior allowed five hits and two runs with a pair of strikeouts.
 
The Rundown
• The Huskies scratched across the first run of the game in the top half of the opening frame. UConn reached on a one-out double before scoring on an RBI single to left field to take the early 1-0 lead.
• UConn added to its lead in the top of the third. The Huskies had a solo homer to right center that doubled their lead to 2-0.
• Elon got into some trouble in the top of the fourth. UConn loaded the bases with one out before drawing a free pass to plate its third run of the contest. The Phoenix limited the damage to just the one run as Elon finagled out of the jam.
• The Phoenix got into scoring position in the home half of the fourth. Kaitlyn Wells reached on a one-out single to left and moved to third after a pair of wild pitches. She would be stranded however as the Huskies retired the next two batters to escape the inning.
• Elon's offense finally came alive in the bottom of the fifth. Mary Moss Wirt led off with a walk, but was in danger of being stranded after the next two batters were retired before Allee Seering came to the plate. The senior hit the first pitch she saw over the wall in left, as the two-run round tripper cut into UConn's lead as the Phoenix trailed 3-2.
• The Huskies answered with a four-run top of the sixth. UConn loaded the bases with one out and scored a pair of runs on a single and a sac fly. Two more runs crossed the dish with two outs as Elon faced a 7-2 deficit.
• Another run would cross the plate for the Huskies in top of the seventh, pushing their lead to 8-2. That would hold as the final score as UConn took the win over the Phoenix.
 
On Deck
The third day of the Elon Softball Classic continues tomorrow as the Phoenix plays a pair of games versus Ohio State and NC Central beginning at 2:30 p.m. Both games will stream on FloCollege (FloSoftball).
