ELON, N.C. – Aided by a six-run top of the third, UNCG handed the Elon University softball team a 9-2 setback on the final day of the Elon Softball Classic on Sunday, Feb. 9 at Hunt Softball Park.
The loss dropped the Phoenix to 1-4 on the season while UNCG moved to 3-2,
At the Plate
• Elon tallied seven hits in the game with
Allee Seering (2-of-4) and
Gabi Schaal (2-of-2) having multi-hit efforts.
• Schaal also belted her second homer of the season and the 29
th in her career. That moves her into sole possession of third all-time in program history in career home runs.
In the Circle
•
Taylor Cherry took the loss in the circle, falling to 0-1 on the season. The redshirt junior pitched 2.0 innings and allowed five earned runs with one strikeout.
McKenna McCard tossed the majority of the innings for the Phoenix as she pitched 4.2 frames with three strikeouts and two earned runs.
The Rundown
• The Spartans scored the first run of the game in the top of the first. UNCG led off with a single but Elon was able to retire the next two batters. A run would score off a triple to shallow right, pushing the Spartans to a 1-0 lead.
• Elon got two baserunners on in the bottom of the second.
Kaitlyn Wells reached on a one-out hit to the pitcher before she and Schaal moved into scoring position after Schaal's double to center. The two players were stranded as the Spartans were able to escape the inning.
• UNCG added to its lead in the top of the third. The Spartans pushed six runs across to improve their lead to 7-0 after three complete.
• A two-run home run for the Spartans in the top of the sixth gave them a 9-0 lead before the inning turned over to the Phoenix's half. Elon responded with a two-run homer of its own courtesy of Schaal as her two-run blast to center cut the Phoenix's deficit to seven, 9-2.
• Elon would have a runner reach in the bottom of the seventh, but could not bring her in as the Spartans closed out the weekend with the 9-2 victory over Elon.
