HAMPTON, Va. – The Elon University softball team scored its most runs since 2011 as the Phoenix won its rubber match over Hampton on Sunday, March 16, 20-9, at the Pirate Softball Stadium.
Elon (12-12, 5-1 CAA) won its second straight CAA series and avenged its setback to the Pirates on Saturday. Hampton fell to 8-15 on the season and 1-5 in CAA play.
At the Plate
• The Phoenix had 18 hits in the game, its most since having 18 versus Drexel in 2019. It's the most runs for the maroon and gold since also scoring 20 runs versus NC Central in 20211.
•
Kaitlyn Wells led six players with multi-hit efforts in the game as the Roswell, Ga., native went 4-of-5 at the plate with a career-high six RBI.
Chloe Hatzopoulos and
Reagan Hartley had three base hits while
Payton Swart drove in four RBI with a pair of doubles.
• Wells,
Gabi Schaal and
Teagan Baulsir each homered in the contest. Wells connected on her seventh home run of the season while Schaal added her fourth and the 31
st in her career. Baulsir had her first career round-tripper in the game.

Greta Hessenthaler went 2-of-4 at the plate, extending her reach base streak to 23 games.
In the Circle
•
McKenna McCard took the win for Elon, improving to 5-2 on the season. The senior allowed two earned runs with three strikeouts in 2.2 innings.
• Starter
Isley Duggins tossed 2.1 frames and allowed six hits and seven runs with a pair of strikeouts.
The Rundown
• Hampton began the high-scoring affair with a four-run bottom of the first. The Pirates scored off an RBI single, a two-RBI triple and a sac fly to put the Phoenix down 4-0 early.
• Elon got a run back in the top of the second.
Chloe Hatzopoulos singled with one out to center field, but was in danger of being stranded after Hampton recorded the second out.
Payton Swart however avoided that for the Phoenix as her double to center drove Hatzopoulos home to cut into the Pirates' lead.
• The Phoenix then exploded in the top of the third with a 10-run frame.
Kaitlyn Wells started the rally with a one-out, two-run homer to center field, bringing Elon within one, 4-3. Elon continued to show the power at the plate as
Gabi Schaal and
Teagan Baulsir both connected on solo round trippers, giving the Phoenix a 5-4 lead.
• Swart kept the runs going in the third as she added her second double of the game, driving in two more for the maroon and gold. Wells came back around in the inning to push two more across the dish before a Hampton error added the tenth run of the frame for Elon, who took an 11-4 advantage into the home half of the third.
• The Pirates however came back with a five-spot in their half of the inning. The combined 15-run third inning made the score 11-9 in favor of the Phoenix going to the fourth.
• Elon got another run across the board in the top of the fourth.
Reagan Hartley was able to hit a single that scored Hatzopoulos and give the Phoenix a 12-9 advantage.
• The Phoenix closed out the scoring in the top of the fifth with an eight-run frame. That gave Elon a 20-9 lead after the top-half of the frame. McCard struck out the side in the bottom half as the Phoenix won its second straight CAA series.
On Deck
• Elon is scheduled to host North Carolina Central on Tuesday, March 18 at Hunt Softball Park. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m. and will stream on FloCollege (FloSoftball).
