ELON, N.C. – The Elon University softball team continued its winning ways during CAA play as the Phoenix defeated Monmouth 11-0 to capture its second league series via a sweep on Sunday afternoon, March 23, at Hunt Softball Park.
Elon (15-12, 8-1 CAA) has now won four straight and eight of its past nine to continue its best-ever start in CAA play. Monmouth fell to 9-22 and 5-4 in the league standings.
At the Plate
• The Phoenix had another strong performance at the dish, registering 10 hits while posting its fifth double-digit scoring outing of the season. Four players had two base knocks in
Greta Hessenthaler (2-of-2),
Kaitlyn Wells (2-of-4),
Chloe Hatzopoulos (2-of-3) and
Mary Moss Wirt (2-of-3).
• Wells drove in four RBI and belted her eighth homer of the season. Hessenthaler and
Payton Swart added two RBI each with Hessenthaler also adding a double to her stat line and extending her reach base streak to 26 games.
•
Gabi Schaal also added an RBI in the game off a sac fly, giving her 120 career ribbies.
In the Circle
•
Meredith Wells earned the win in the circle for the Phoenix, moving to 2-1 on the year. The fifth-year pitched 4.0 scoreless frames and gave up three hits with a strikeout.
Isley Duggins added two strikeouts in her 1.0 inning of action.
The Rundown
• The Phoenix did most of its scoring damage in the bottom of the second. A one-out single to right center by Wirt loaded the bases for the Phoenix as she joined Hatzopoulos and
Lani Wyrick to put ducks on the pond. A fielder's choice on the next at bat induced the second out, but the Phoenix began its onslaught off a Hessenthaler two-RBI double to center field. Swart followed with a two-RBI single followed by
Kaitlyn Wells' two-run homer to left center to give Elon a 6-0 lead.
• Elon added five more runs in its home half of the fourth.
Kaitlyn Wells drove in a pair of runs on a one-out single while a Monmouth error aided another run for the maroon and gold. Schaal's sac fly pushed another run across the dish before the Phoenix added its final tally off another Hawks' mishap to go ahead 11-0.
• The Hawks tried to rally with two outs in the top of the fifth to break their shutout. Duggins struck out the first two batters of the frame, but a Phoenix error followed by two singles loaded the bases for Monmouth. Elon finagled out of the jam with a fly out to short to close out the game and the series with the 11-0 win via run-rule.
On Deck
• The Phoenix hosts East Carolina on Tuesday, March 25 to close out its four-game homestand. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m. and will stream on FloCollege (FloSoftball).
