NEWARK, Del. – The Elon University softball team was handed its first loss in five games as the Phoenix suffered a 9-1 setback at Delaware on Friday evening, March 28, at the Delaware Softball Stadium.
The loss snapped Elon's season-long five-game win streak as the Phoenix fell to 16-13 overall and 8-2 in the CAA. The Blue Hens improved to 19-11 on the season with an 8-2 ledger versus league foes.
At the Plate
• Elon was held to four hits at the dish, converted by four different players as
Greta Hessenthaler (1-of-3),
Allee Seering (1-of-3),
Gabi Schaal (1-of-2) and
Mary Moss Wirt each had a base knock for the maroon and gold. Seering added the lone RBI for Elon while Hessenthaler reached base for the 28
th straight game.
In the Circle

McKenna McCard suffered the loss for Elon toeing the rubber, falling to 6-3. The senior pitched 2.2 frames with six runs allowed with a strikeout.

Meredith Wells tossed 3.0 innings in relief, allowing three runs off five hits.
The Rundown
• The Blue Hens answered first on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second. Delaware had its first two runners reach on singles, but Elon nearly escaped the frame unharmed after retiring the next two batters. The Blue Hens responded with a two-out double, scoring a pair of runs to go ahead 2-0.
• Elon came back with a run in the top of the third. Wirt drove a one-out single to center and moved to second after a hit-by-pitch to
Reagan Hartley. Hartley would get called out at second on a fielder's choice that advanced Wirt to third with Seering coming to the dish. Seering took a 2-2 count through the left side, scoring Wirt to put the Phoenix on the board.
• Delaware however came back with a five-spot in the bottom of the third to push its lead to 7-1, scoring all of its runs with two outs in the inning.
• A solo home run in the bottom of the fourth by the Blue Hens added to their advantage 8-1 before tacking on the final run in the bottom of the sixth to earn the 9-1 victory via run-rule over the Phoenix.
