Blue Hens Take Rubber Match Over Phoenix, 3-2

NEWARK, Del. – The Elon University softball team battled back from an early deficit to send the game into extras, but the Phoenix would fall at Delaware, 3-2, in its CAA rubber match on Sunday afternoon, March 30, at Delaware Softball Stadium.

Elon falls to 17-14 and 9-3 in the CAA. Delaware improves to 20-12 and also 9-3 in league play.

At the Plate
• Elon was held to four hits in the game against the Blue Hens. Kaitlyn Wells accounted for three of those hits, going 3-of-3 at the plate. She added a home run, two RBI and a double to her stat line. Mary Moss Wirt recorded the other hit for the Phoenix.
Greta Hessenthaler reached on a walk, extending her reached base streak to 30 games.

• Starter Isley Duggins went 3.0 frames and allowed two runs with a strikeout.

The Rundown
• The Blue Hens struck first on the scoreboard in the bottom of the opening frame. Delaware hit a leadoff home run to put the Phoenix down early, 1-0.
• Another solo home run for Delaware doubled its lead in the bottom of the second as the Phoenix faced a 2-0 deficit.
• Elon responded with a solo home run of its own in the top of the fourth. Wells took a 0-2 count into center field and the Phoenix trailed the Blue Hens, 2-1.
• Wells came back to help the Phoenix tie the game in the top of the sixth. Allee Seering reached on a fielder's choice before scoring on an RBI double off the right field wall by Wells to tie the game at 2-2. Wells advanced to third with two outs, but the Phoenix could not drive her in as the inning closed on a groundout.
• The game would go into extra innings and after the Phoenix offense was quieted in the top of the eight, Delaware loaded the bases in its home half with no outs. Elon finagled the first out on a fielder's choice to retire the lead runner at home, but a sac fly to right would drive in the walk-off run for the Blue Hens, who took the series on the 3-2 victory.

On Deck
• Elon returns to the diamond, hosting College of Charleston on April 4-6 at Hunt Softball Park.
